“The Italian Railway Network in Campania has presented an investment plan exceeding 23 billion euros, which includes high-speed infrastructure, regional and metropolitan connections”. Thus Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of RFI (Italian Railway Network) who presented the mobility innovation projects in Naples during the conference “The Naples to come” at the Industrial Union of the Campania city. The railways presented the assets of Napoli Porta Est, for which the international design tender was illustrated, and of Napoli Campi Flegrei with FS Sistemi Urbani, the lead company of the Urban Hub of the FS Italiane Group, to interested stakeholders and investors the redevelopment of these areas. Napoli Porta Est and Napoli Campi Flegrei therefore represent two great investment opportunities within the city, in sites with great development potential, high accessibility and a high concentration of strategic functions. The sites and areas affected by the projects, in fact, thus become the opportunity to implement a transformation of the urban areas subject to intervention to return regenerated spaces to the community, through the valorization and urban mending of the city fabric. As regards, in particular, the “Napoli Porta Est” project will be divided into the areas of the former FS goods yard of Corso Lucci and Porta Nolana. The construction of a new intermodal hub in direct connection between the station-port-airport is envisaged with the simultaneous urban regeneration of the entire city area which extends for approximately 180,000 m2. For the implementation of the project, in September 2023 the Campania Region, the Municipality of Naples, Eav, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and FS Sistemi Urbani signed a Program Agreement which provides, among other objectives, an international design competition for the drafting of the Masterplan overall of the interventions, including the design of the new Headquarters of the Campania Region at the former freight yard. Furthermore, “RFI – explained Strisciuglio – is working closely with the Municipality of Naples to redevelop the stations on the Line 2 metro. We started with the first 4 stations, including for example the Naples Piazza Cavour station, for a commitment of 100 million euros, we are currently in the planning phase and we hope to open the first construction sites by 2024 with the aim of guaranteeing better accessibility. On this there is great synergy with the other companies of the FS Group to allow the inclusion of infrastructures in the various territories and satisfy the mobility needs of individual communities”.
