The Municipality of Nettuno seriously risks bankruptcy. Technically it’s called “financial distress”, but that’s the concept.

Prefect Antonio Reppucci, who has led the city since November 2022 when the municipal administration was dissolved due to mafia infiltration, admits this. Reppucci admitted the financial difficulties of the Municipality by intervening in a discussion on the former Tosi retirement home. It is a municipally owned building granted to private individuals but left in a state of complete abandonment and decay.

A user has in fact posted photos of both the inside, where it is clear that someone has occupied it, and the outside, with rubbish and brambles. The building had undergone remediation almost five months ago.

In recent months there had also been an inspection by two financial groups who had expressed interest in making the site operational and functional. The interested parties subsequently gave up, in light of the considered considerable financial investment to recover and revitalize the artefact, in compliance with the existential purposes. This is what the Nettuno Prefectural Commission explained in December.

For years the building called the former Tosi municipal retirement home in Nettuno – a four-storey structure for a total of 1,700 m2 – has been in a serious state of neglect and abandonment, accessible to anyone. This situation has been repeatedly denounced by associations of various expressions and by the inhabitants who live nearby, concerned about the sanitation situation and public safety. As emerged from checks by the Local Police, people, especially non-EU citizens, find improvised night shelter in that structure.

The debts of the Municipality of Nettuno

«Negotiations are underway with a foundation to recover the site and make it work for social welfare purposes», explained the prefect Reppucci, who however went further by illustrating the financial situation of the institution.

«For the rest, the Municipality is in serious difficulty – he specifies – with a debt already accrued of one and a half million euros (Enel 2015/2016, compensation for the company responsible for building the swimming pool which won the case) to be paid shortly and which could lead to the collapse of the municipality.”
