Carrara, hundreds of quarrymen on marble strike

Hundreds of quarrymen demonstrated in front of the Franchi Umberto marble company in Carrara (Massa Carrara) this morning as a sign of protest.

The demonstration was called by the trade unions Feneal Uil, Filca Cisl and Fillea Cgil after the marble industrialist Alberto Franchi reported an off-air interview in which, according to the entrepreneur, the workers who were victims of accidents in the quarries would get hurt because “deficients”.

Words that have raised controversy, creating discontent among workers and general public indignation.

The mayor of Carrara Serena Arrighi, as well as the unions and local political forces, distanced themselves from Franchi’s words.

The Social and Labor Pastoral Office (PSL) of the Diocese of Massa Carrara-Pontremoli had also taken a position in this regard.

Yesterday Alberto Franchi apologized for what he said off-air, calling them ‘inappropriate’.

This morning the demonstration began in front of the gates of Franchi Umberto, in the Nazzano area, around 9 am, with numerous flags and banners and in the presence of the trade unions who called the demonstration.

In addition to the many quarrymen present, there are also numerous citizens and some families of the quarrymen themselves, who arrived at the event in solidarity with the entire category. a procession is then planned that will arrive at the local Confindustria headquarters on viale XX Settembre.
