Yesterday evening – Tuesday 23 April – “Fratello Sole” was organized at the Cinema Teatro the meeting between Agesp and citizens to talk about the new local collection, which has already started in the other districts of Busto Arsizio. The audience was full and there were people in the gallery too. There are still many doubts, and it is always the same “hot spots” that are worrying.

In the center the new punctual collection of undifferentiated waste with the microchipped blue bag and fortnightly frequency will start on May 13th. To shed light on separate waste collection, Paola Rossi – from the environmental communication agency Ahab Group – also started yesterday with a brief “review”. But, once again, doubts about where to throw some objects remained (in the meantime we remind you of the Agesp waste dictionary, HERE).

Among the most requested (which also emerged in previous meetings) are: the litter boxes, which go into the undifferentiated waste if they are mineral and into the organic waste if they are compostable. Polystyrene for packaging – such as that of food and household appliances – must be thrown into plastic.

Medicine blisters are mostly made of plastic, with some exceptions, which are made of aluminium, and must therefore be collected with glass. Syringes, on the other hand, must be thrown into undifferentiated waste, equipped with a cap so that the bag can be handled safely. Furthermore, paper napkins are destined for wet waste if they have food residues, while plates and glasses must be taken to the Multi-collection Centre, as well as neon light bulbs.

For nappies and nappies – remembers Paola Rossi, as at every meeting – there is the special red bag, the collection of which will remain weekly. Female sleepers and sanitary napkins, on the other hand, go in the unsorted bin.

However, doubts are not limited to where to throw waste. One of the major concerns of citizens is thecollected fortnightly, especially as summer approaches. Many complain of not knowing where to keep the blue bag for fifteen days, and fear the onset of bad odors and hygiene problems.

Agesp’s response is always the same: There is no one-size-fits-all solution. The objective of timely collection is to ensure that everyone becomes responsible for the waste they produce, and this also means learning how to manage it and identifying the best strategy according to their needs. The advice is – if possible – to keep the blue bag outdoors, perhaps inside a container, and use smaller bags to contain waste that can cause unpleasant odors.

Tari, bags and penalties

Also of extreme interest is the question of the Tari, which will be calculated based on the number of blue bags that will be collected, and not on their weight, so Agesp’s suggestion is to expose the bags only once they are full.

Also the number of bags worries: some might break, or some families might need more bags. Those provided free of charge each year are 26 for families of up to 4 members and 39 for larger families, but those who wish to have more can purchase them at vending machines.

Another point that emerged (also) last night is that of sanctions. People are worried about making a mistake when throwing away waste and fear that someone might open their bag while it is exposed, adding items that shouldn’t go in the garbage. «We can all make a mistake, and the objective of this system is not to give fines – reiterates Paola Rossi -. The problem arises when these errors are repeated and constant.” Furthermore, she reassures those with bad intentions: they will not always choose the same person’s bag to put their rubbish in.
