A scam attempt aimed at exploiting the vulnerability of the elderly was foiled today in Aprilia thanks to the quick reaction of a family and the effective intervention of the local police forces. A man, already known for similar precedents and resident in Naples, was identified and released in a state of freedom from the Aprilia Carabinieri Station following careful investigative activity.
The story started from a complaint filed by an elderly lady, temporarily living with her daughter, who received a fraudulent call on her home landline. During the phone call, an individual attempted to impersonate the old woman’s nephew, urgently requesting money to collect a non-existent package stuck in the post office. The plan involved the woman handing over the requested sum to an accomplice who would show up at her house.
Fortunately, the timely intervention of the real nephew and son-in-law stopped the scam before it could materialize, thus avoiding possible serious economic and emotional damage to the victim.
In this context, the importance of adopting precautionary behaviors to prevent similar episodes is reiterated:
- Be wary of requests for money from strangers, even if they pose as relatives or close friends.
- Never share personal or banking information without having secure confirmation of the requester’s identity.
