Tragedy in the late morning today in Bema, in the Orobie Alps in Valtellina. A 41-year-old Moroccan woman, Ghizlane Moutahir, who has been in Italy for many years and resident in Oliveto Lario (Lecco), lost her life while trying the adrenaline-filled experience of Fly Emotion, the zipline that allows you to fly over the Valle del Bitto supported by a harness suspended from a steel cable stretched between the Valtellina town of Albaredo per San Marco and the Alpine village of Bema.

According to an initial reconstruction by the Morbegno carabinieri, the woman had arrived about twenty meters from the arrival station in Bema, therefore on the first of the two routes, the one between Albaredo for San Marco and Bema, and was more than 30 meters from height when it stopped, perhaps because it was too light.

At this point she may have gotten scared and removed her feet from the safety stirrups and then, perhaps because the harness was loose, she slipped into the void. She rolled into the woods below, dying instantly.

The first to arrive on site were the 118 medics with a Red Cross ambulance, but they found her already lifeless. Immediately afterwards, the air ambulance arrived from Sondrio with a doctor who confirmed his death. The Alpine Rescue technicians and firefighters then recovered the woman’s body. The police are investigating. The Sondrio Prosecutor’s Office, directed by Piero Basilone, ordered the seizure of the system, the clothing worn by the victim and the harness. After the inspection by the magistrate on duty, Stefano Latorre, the body recovered from the cliff was removed and the magistrates have already decided that an autopsy will be carried out on the woman’s body.

The investigation, in its initial stages, aims first of all to establish whether the harness was worn correctly by the tourist from Lecco. The 41-year-old, married and without children, was in Valtellina for a day of fun and relaxation together with some family members, including her two nieces. The girls had just finished the crossing as a couple, then their aunt left alone. Around 12.20 the tragedy, still without answers. As soon as he received the news of the dramatic accident, the CEO of Fly Emotion, Matteo Sanguineti, got into the car to reach Bema.

“We are shocked and incredulous – he comments -. In 13 years, since the plant was inaugurated in 2011, nothing remotely comparable has ever happened, over 200 thousand people have flown through the plant, many of them tourists on holiday in Valtellina. My first thoughts go to the victim and his family, to whom I express my deepest condolences. We are at the disposal of the judicial authorities and we will be the first to try to understand what may have happened.”
