The presentation of the ninth edition of the Guide to Italian Beers 2025 starts from Brescia

The journey of Slow Food Editore’s Guide to Italian Beers 2025 starts from Brescia. La Leonessa hosts the presentation of the ninth edition of the publication with two days of full-scale events, on 24 and 25 May 2024.

It is the most important guide of the artisanal brewing sector in Italy. The Guide to Italian beers published by Slow Food Editore since 2008, every two years presents to enthusiasts, professionals and the world of consumers more generally a picture of the best national production, assigning prizes and recognitions to the best breweries, beers that were most appreciated by the authors of the guide, to the best ciders and excellent places to drink and buy these excellences.

The stage for the national presentation of the ninth edition of the Guide to Italian Beers will be the City of Brescia: promoted by the Municipality of Brescia and in partnership with MO.CA – Center for new cultures, Slow Food Editore and the Slow Food Terreacque Bresciane Convivium have organized two days of initiatives that revolve around the world of craft beer and which will feature, alongside the authors of the guide, the best Italian producers with their most iconic and representative labels.

The timetable of events

We will start on Friday 24 May 2024 at 11 am at the San Barnaba Auditorium with the actual presentation of the book: the editors of the guide, Luca Giaccone and Eugenio Signoroni, they will talk about the new edition of the publication and present the awards to the breweries highlighted with the Chiocciola and to those awarded with the Excellence, to the best cider producers and to the establishments that stand out for the high quality of their beer offering (entry by invitation). The program will continue on Friday afternoon at 4pm at MO.CA with a technical workshop dedicated to producers and focused on the topic of fermentation (the process underlying the production of beer).

Also at MO.CA, at 7 pm, the Beer Tourism meeting will be held. A new perspective for the future of the sector. A dialogue with Gabriele Navoni, Alberto Calderoni and Luca Grandi, authors of Turismo Birrario: guide for travelers in turmoil (LSWR Editions) and Luca Giaccone and Eugenio Signoroni, authors of Il Piacere della Birra and I Paese della Birra – Belgium (Slow Food Editore ).

On Saturday 25th the program will be enriched with two other appointments: at 11am and 4pm at MO.CA, an informative meeting dedicated to beginners and the curious, during which Eugenio Signoroni, editor of the guide of Brescia origin, will tell the story of beer and will explain how it is produced and what its peculiarities are, for an unmissable opportunity to get to know this very ancient and still very modern drink (free entry with accreditation); at 3pm and 5pm, at the Birralab, La Pulce, Spine and Taverna di Paola premises, four Taste Workshops will take place which will give the opportunity to taste some of the best beers and ciders in Italy paired with the products of the Padernello Earth Market (admission fee upon reservation).

On both Friday 24th and Saturday 25th there will also be the opportunity for everyone to taste the beers from the award-winning breweries. The Birralab, La Pulce, Spine and Taverna di Paola venues will in fact offer an exceptional tour of Italy of craft beer: throughout the opening hours the four venues will host the most representative beers of the breweries awarded by the guide and whoever visits these venues will have therefore the unique opportunity to taste products with different styles, production areas and characteristics.

The program

Today, the dance hall at the MO.CA in Brescia hosted the presentation of the program of the two days in Brescia on 24 and 25 May dedicated to beer. In his speech the councilor for Productive Activities and Tourism Andrea Poli highlighted how:

«Hosting the presentation of the ninth edition of the Guide to Italian beers is, for Brescia, a privilege and an honor. Not only because we are talking about a highly prestigious guide, a reference for the Italian artisanal brewing sector, but also for the history of our city. Brescia, in fact, saw the birth of Wührer, the oldest Italian brewery, and, in the province, there are numerous excellent breweries, which enrich the offer of quality artisanal products. I can therefore only hope for all of us that this fruitful collaboration continues and that the process of protecting the local agri-food heritage, which began with the establishment of the Municipal Designation (De.co.), allows us to valorise the great resources of identity, cultural, historical, economic and tourist value of our territory”.

The one in Brescia will not be a simple presentation of the Guide but:

«It represents – underlined Eugenio Signoroni, editor of the Guide to Italian Beers – a unique opportunity for all enthusiasts to discover the best of Italian Beer according to Slow Food. In fact, we will bring to Brescia, a city that has a historical connection with beer, some of the best beer and cider producers with their products, which thanks to the synergy with the city’s venues can be enjoyed during some workshops and on evenings of Friday 24th and Saturday 25th. However, the presentation will also be an opportunity to reflect on the entire beer supply chain from the production of raw materials to the administration and sale of the finished drink”.

A central role in organizing the presentation is played by the local delegation of the snail association:

«The Slow Food Terreacque Bresciane Convivium – underlines its president Lorenzo Econimo – is honored to be able to host the national presentation of the Guide to Italian beers in its territory. The province of Brescia is a place that has given a lot to Slow Food, since the origins of the association. Being able to bring a national initiative is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the area and its gastronomic peculiarities. We involved some of the city’s entities and the producers of the Padernello Earth Market to create, together with Slow Food Editore, a program that could be interesting both for the breweries, cider producers and venues reviewed in the Guide, and for Slow Food members and enthusiasts who will come from other provinces and will thus have the opportunity to get to know Brescia and its proposals”.
