Contravention on the Sicignano-Potenza connection. Police stops an elderly man, avoiding a massacre

The State Police stopped a vehicle in Tito who was proceeding in the opposite direction on the motorway and rescued the disoriented elderly driver.

The intervention involving two patrols of the Potenza Traffic Police employed in the road surveillance service on the Motorway Junction 05 (Sicignano-Potenza) during today’s night was particularly dangerous.

In fact, around 1.20 am, while they were passing near the Tito junction, in the direction of Sicignano, the officers noticed a car proceeding in the same direction, but on the opposite road, which was dodged several times by vehicles heading towards Power.

The operators promptly managed to block the car by reporting the obstacle to oncoming vehicles, finding an elderly gentleman of Calabrian origins driving, alone on board who, despite the invitation to reverse the direction of travel, continued to maintain that he was proceeding in the right direction.

Having perceived the state of confusion in which the eighty-year-old found himself, in order to restore safety conditions, one of the officers took over driving the vehicle and took him off the motorway,

Subsequently, the gentleman was contacted by telephone with his family and, considering the climatic conditions, taken to the offices of the Potenza Traffic Police where he was reassured and visited by the “118 Basilicata Soccorso” staff waiting to entrust him to his children, who arrived in the morning from Calabria.

At the end of the operations, which involved strict measures on the driving license and on the availability of the vehicle, the officers received the thanks of the family members for the providential intervention which can be traced back to the claim of the State Police “always being there”.
