The planting project of the “Tommaso Forti” Park Of Fiumicino which, on the initiative of Rome airports And Lagardère Travel Retail Italywith the technical support of Etifor and WOWnature, has seen the planting, starting last March, of around 100 new native plants, including lime trees, maples, hackberry trees, ash trees, as the first modernization activity of the garden for the benefit of the community local.

The Vice Mayor attended the inauguration Joanna Honored and the Environment Councilor Stefano Costa for the Municipality of Fiumicino, as well as Marilena BlasiChief Commercial Officer of Aeroporti di Roma, Sergio BerlenghiHead of Public Affairs & Stakeholder Engagement e Alberto NieroChief Executive Officer & Managing Director Lagardère Travel Retail Italia, who illustrated how this initiative represents a concrete demonstration of the commitment of the two companies, in synergy with the local Administration, on the environmental sustainability front and towards the territory and its citizenship.

The project is part of a broader path, started in 2021 by Aeroporti di Roma, the management company of the Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, and Lagardère Travel Retail, a leading group in the Duty Free & Fashion, Food Service & Travel Essentials sectors, which sees the two companies engaged for some time with the aim of progressively replacing plastic shopping bags, sold in some sales points managed by Lagardère Travel Retail Italia in the two Roman airports, with paper or reusable bags.

To offer a contribution concrete to valorisation of the territory in which they operate, ADR and Lagardère Travel Retail Italia have decided to invest in reforestation, planting and environmental redevelopment interventions, identifying, together with the municipal administrations of Fiumicino and Ciampino, two areas suitable for carrying out redevelopment interventions and the creation of spaces usable by the citizenship, while enhancing biodiversity and naturalistic conservation.

Partner technician of the project is EtiforB Corp and spin-off of the University of Padua, specialized in the valorization of natural heritage and in environmental consultancy with a scientific approach that takes shape, with respect to the reforestation and protection initiatives of wooded areas, in its program WOWnature. The intervention responds to the need to create a green barrier with tall trees along the entire perimeter of the park neighboring with highly frequented roads to help reduce the consequent presence of fine dust and noise pollution. In the internal areas of the park, however, the presence of tree-lined islands will also help to mitigate summer thermal excesses through the resulting shaded areas.

In addition to the system of shrubs, the initiative also included targeted recovery interventions on other areas of the Park such as the architecture of the garden, the conservation of the identity of the place and the creation of renovated usable spaces. Soon, at the end of the journey, Aeroporti di Roma will deliver 10 picnic sets, which will subsequently be installed by the Municipality and which, together with the installation of the new trees, will allow better use of the park by the many citizens and children who they already frequent it every day.
