Onofri: “Retegui is not a phenomenon like Osimhen, Guðmundsson is the real intuition of this Genoa team”

The former Genoa and Turin footballer Claudio Onofri gave a long interview to our site to talk about Naples but also about Retegui. Here are his words:

Moment to forget for Napoli, how can the Azzurri come out of it in these last championship matches?

“It is difficult to judge such a complex situation that shows how the Italian champion team could have been reduced in that way and we are not talking about purchases or sales, the team has the structure and engine capacity of the previous year but the driver/s (Garcia-Mazzarri and Calzona) didn’t know how to drive a car as best as it could, which last year was going at 100.”

Many names are being mentioned for the Napoli bench for next year, from Conte to Pioli, what type of project do the Azzurri need to return to being competitive?

“All names that have my respect but for me there is only one name: Gasperson, someone who has his own character but at the end of the year he enhances all the squads at his disposal, he raises the value of every single player and… when you go to the STADIUM you have fun and you don’t think about anything else, especially in a parterre called Diego Armando Maradona you can’t help but think about making people happy and getting them excited… I saw Atalanta live – Liverpool felt like being at Anfield Road”.

Ostigard did not disfigure himself in the last match against Empoli, one of the few to try to save himself. Do you see his future away from Naples or can he still take advantage of his chances?

“Ostigard has been a disappointment for me so far because due to his technical, tactical characteristics and personality I thought he would carve out a larger space for himself even though given his age, in my opinion he can still do it and therefore I would still focus on him”.

Retegui had a decent championship and will play in the next European Championships with Spalletti’s Italy. Can he also be the future striker of Napoli as well as the national team, to take up Osimhen’s legacy?

“He is not a phenomenon like Osimhen but he has very interesting qualities and characteristics even for a big club because he is complete in all the fundamentals required of a striker and on a character level I score 8.5 how much he fights to keep the ball and make the team move forward and if the others have the ball and there is inadvertently a space left free by a teammate running at a hundred miles an hour to help you in defense too”.

Was Guðmundsson the real big revelation this season? Would you see him ready to make the leap in quality to a big team?

“Gudmundsson was the pearl of 777 Partners taken for the ridiculous sum of one and a half million from AZ, it’s true that he’s no longer really a rookie but now he’s worth at least twenty times more, but you have to let him do what he feels inside his head and heart to move freely in all areas of the pitch and then he always creates numerical superiority, invents assists for his teammates and throws them in himself a lot of times and also gives you a hand in the defensive phase, great player!”.
