PALERMO – Patrizio Cinque, former mayor of Bagheria, is the most voted in the online primaries of the Five Star Movement for the choice of M5s candidates from Sicily and Sardinia. Cinque, who returned to the movement after the acquittal obtained for some judicial matters, obtained 842 votes.

M5s primaries for the European elections, the numbers

The primaries of the Five Star Movement saw the participation of 23,744 members in all five constituencies, out of 159,908 eligible voters. In percentage terms, a decidedly low turnout, equal to 14.85%. The activists expressed a total of 39,298 preferences.

The other names on the list for the European Championships

The Palermo city councilor also ‘passes his turn’ Antonino Randazzo, which with 552 votes obtained fifth place in the online competition. The trio of male names is completed by Sardinian Matteo Porcu: for him 574 votes and fourth place.

Among the women, the place on the list is the fire engineer Antonella Di Primathe most voted after Cinque thanks to the 610 votes collected, and the municipal councilor of Gela Virginia Farruggia (third with 576 preferences from activists). The last useful position, the sixth, is grabbed by the lawyer from Catania Matilde Montaudo: 543 votes for her.

The names chosen by Conte

The list of six names of M5s Sicily and Sardinia candidates is then completed with two choices made by the leader Giuseppe Conte. It’s about Giuseppe Antociformer president of the Nebrodi Park who has long been identified as the leader, and a last minute news: Cinzia Pilo, professor at the Bicocca University of Milan engaged in social responsibility projects. Pilo will be the second name after Antoci. Conte’s choice will have to pass the scrutiny of the members but it is difficult for the network to disavow the former prime minister’s decision.

The great excluded

The race for the 2024 European elections has knocked out two important names in the movement on the island: that of the former regional deputy Giovanni Di Carorepresentative of the province of Agrigento, and of the former mayor of Ragusa (the first Sicilian city to vote for a five-star mayor) Federico Piccitto. For Di Caro 435 votes, Piccitto obtained 394. Both remain outside the list of M5s Sicily and Sardinia candidates.
