“Inter are really strong. Extraordinary championship, they lost a match by mistake”

Stefano Pioli he is one of the first protagonists of Milan-Inter who appears in front of the DAZN cameras after the San Siro derby: “I went to the locker room to try to cheer up, it’s a heavy defeat for everything that goes into this defeat. I tried to cheer up my players, we have another important match. Unfortunately we were unable to draw this derby again.”

Did the attacking move satisfy you or were you disappointed?
“Disappointed from a tactical point of view, no, we wanted to remove the numerical parity on the 2 against 2 defensively and find space in the counterattacks. Inter hurt us in the first half with the goal from the corner and with the counterattacks, we had some opportunities but the reality is that we wanted to defend lower so as not to concede what then happened in Thuram’s goal. The team fought and in the episodes they didn’t have that bit of luck for the equalizer.”

What do these 17 points away from Inter depend on?
“There are many things inside, Inter had an extraordinary championship and lost a match by mistake. They have had the strongest team in the championship for 3 or 4 years, we were lacking in some months and in continuity. If the difference is like this remarkable means that they are really strong and that the others have to work.”

What have you missed in the last few games?
“We had a very good start to the campaign, then after the break we had difficulties. The two starts against Roma were not the ones we wanted, we got stuck with performances below our potential and we didn’t reach our objective. The derby has arrived at this moment, but I can’t blame my team for anything: in episodes the ball could have arrived earlier. It was perhaps the most balanced derby of recent times, but it wasn’t enough.”

Cycle over?
“I don’t know. I first heard Inzaghi’s analysis, he seemed to be in difficulty and then he did everything he did. I’m fine, I’m working well and we have to finish the championship well. The evaluations will be made once the bowls have stopped.”
