Moretti attempts an encore and Zan “duplicates” himself

He will be the governor of Emilia Romagna, Stefano Bonaccini, the leader of the Democratic Party in the next European elections in the North-East, the district that groups together Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige and, indeed, Emilia-Romagna. Having considered the game of the third mandate for the regional presidents closed, Bonaccini therefore decided to leave Bologna for Brussels.

European elections, candidates in the Northeast

A race that will also involve four Venetians: the Vicenza one Alessandra Moretti, who is completing his first mandate as an MEP; the deputy from Padua Alessandro Zan, exponent of the LGBT community, known for having promoted and obtained the first Italian registry of unmarried couples (also a candidate in the North-West constituency); the Treviso area Andrea Zanoni, regional councilor, former MEP from 2011 to 2014; from Brescia, but Veronese by adoption, Ivan Pedrettiformer secretary of the national Spi Cgil pensioners union and before that Venetian.

Of the 15 candidates in the Northeast, yesterday the national direction of the Democratic Party was led by Elly Schlein he disclosed 12 of them. In this order: Stefano Bonaccini, Annalisa Corrado, Ivan Pedretti, Elisabetta Gualmini, Alessandro Zan, Alessandra Moretti, Giuditta Pini, Silvia Panini, Antonio Mumolo, Sara Vito, Marcello Saltarelli, Andrea Zanoni. In second place on the list after Bonaccini, Schlein therefore wanted Annalista Corrado, born in 1973, a Roman engineer expert in the energy transition sector who is part of the party’s national secretariat with environmental mandates. In addition to Bonaccini, from Emilia Romagna there are: Elisabetta Gualmini, full professor of Political Science at the University of Bologna, outgoing MEP; Giuditta Pini, former Italian deputy in the previous legislature, from Matteo Orfini’s area; Silvia Padini, representative of the progressive and pan-European Volt movement; Antonio Mumolo, regional councilor and president of the Street Lawyer association; Marcello Saltarelli, also from Volt. Finally, from Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sara Vito, provincial secretary of the Democratic Party of Gorizia.

In 2019 the Democratic Party had elected four deputies in Brussels (Carlo Calenda, who then gave way to Achille Variati; Elisabetta Gualnini, Paolo De Castro, Alessandra Moretti). The expectations are to elect four more MEPs: in addition to Bonaccini, the most popular are Corrado, Gualmini, Zan (who however could also make it to the North West), Moretti.

THE REACTIONS
«The candidacy proposals that emerged in our regional management have been confirmed – said the Venetian secretary Andrea Martella -. It is a list full of important personalities, competitive, open to the outside, with a strong Venetian connotation. And the leader Bonaccini will be able to address the productive fabric of our region.” The outgoing Paolo De Castro was not re-nominated and FdI senator Luca De Carlo regrets this: «I know that this choice should – opportunistically – make me happy, but the exclusion of De Castro from the Democratic Party’s European lists risks being a serious damage for Italy. I won’t go into the merits of the choices of the other parties, but there is no doubt that De Castro deserves credit for years of hard work in defense of the interests of real farmers. His absence risks leaving room for that entire pseudo-environmentalist area that a priori and propagandistically supports the Green Deal, and this certainly will not do the good of our nation. My thanks to De Castro for having worked in Europe for the defense of farmers.”
