Below are communications regarding the meeting “Our children, the collective responsibility on the orphans of feminicide which was held in the conference room of the Sicilian Region Palace in Catania (formerly ESA) in via Beato Bernardo 5. The initiative was promoted by the regional deputy of the Democratic Party, Ersilia Saverino, with the patronage of the presidency of the Sicilian regional assembly.

Our children, the collective responsibility on the orphans of feminicide” this is the theme of the event organized in the conference room of the Palazzo della Regione Siciliana in Catania (former ESA) and promoted by the regional deputy of the Democratic Party, Ersilia Saverino, with the patronage of the presidency of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. A packed room to underline the important moment to take stock of the situation regarding the policies in favor of those boys or girls, girls or boys who have been deprived of a family, as well as the fundamental presence of the mother.

“Thank you all for accepting our invitation to participate in a meeting that deals with a topic very dear to me. About a year ago, I posed a question regarding funds for anti-violence centres, shelter homes and above all for orphans and from that moment it was already highlighted that we were in the presence of a legislative short circuit whereby the regional law comes into conflict with the precise national regulation with the result that the regional regulation is disapplied. We posed the problem of how to make this legislation effective in our region too and so the initiative was born to include a reference to orphans of feminicides in the regional law on gender violence”

It is with these words that the Ars deputy Ersilia Saverinosignatory of the proposal which provides for the provision of contributions “for the support of orphans of domestic crimes” and approved in the last financial law, opened the meeting which also recorded the institutional intervention of the prefect of Catania, Maria Carmela Librizziand the relationships of: Graziella Priulla (formerly professor of sociology of communication at the University of Catania), Carmen Bosco (psychotherapist, responsible for the “Respiro” project for Thamaia), Monica Malafoglia (legal expert of Save The Children for the “Respiro” project), Gabriella Messina (regional secretary of CGIL Sicily), Giuseppe Vecchio (Authority for Children and Adolescents), Marisa Scavo (magistrate at the district attorney’s office of Catania), Valeria Valente (Senator of the Republic and member of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into Femicide and against every form of gender violence) and of many associations with the testimony of Giovanna Cardile. The Police Commissioner of Catania was present Giuseppe Bellassaithe Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri Colonello Salvatore Altavillathe general Lucathe Major of the Financial Police Emilia Altomonte and the parish priest of the Cathedral of Catania Monsignor Barbarian Scionti who brought greetings from Archbishop Renna.

“With the latest budget it is established that the Region, in addition to financing anti-violence centers and shelters, provides contributions to support orphans of domestic crimes – reiterates the Honorable Saverino Provincial President of the Catania PD– the chapter of the regional budget, through which anti-violence centers and shelters are financed, provides for an allocation of 2 million 355 thousand, with an increase compared to 2023 of 900 thousand euros. There is another chapter which provides for direct provision to social institutions that organize services, but these are residual hypotheses so much so that the financial allocation is only 15 thousand euros. Following the rule that I strongly wanted, the general accountant, Ignazio Tozzo, took steps to integrate the nomenclature of the two chapters by inserting the recognition of orphans of feminicide”.

The prefect of Catania, Maria Carmela Librizziin his introductory greeting he underlined the central role of the institutions in such an important topic within the cultural debate of the city, subsequently summarizing the main initiatives in support of those who, until recently, were invisible victims.

Valeria ValenteSenator of the Republic and Member of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into Femicide and against every form of gender violence, he underlined that we often talk about male violence against women but we must realize that there is an even more atrocious violence behind all this: that which is committed on children who very often risk remaining alone. When the murderer is handed over to justice, the children are left without parents and are thus exposed to a very difficult life and very complicated conditions. In this context, in 2018, an important law was passed, dedicated to orphans feminicidewhich takes care of these people from all points of view.
