Interventional Radiology is an innovation in modern medicine that treats various pathologies in a non-invasive way: with punctures under local anesthesia and without cutting the skin it can replace or assist surgery. In most cases the patient is treated as a day hospital or with a single night of hospitalization. In short, modern radiology is no longer limited to the diagnostic phase alone but intervenes directly in the treatment of diseases in delicate clinical conditions. The interventional radiologist thus becomes a new figure of medical radiologist, through images and is able to guide transcutaneously, without the need for invasive surgical interventions, instruments, catheters, needles, medical devices for loco-regional therapy both in the cardiovascular field, oncological and traumatic in elective but above all emergency conditions, operating directly in rooms closely connected to the emergency rooms.

Interventional radiology is widespread in Sicilian healthcare facilities, even reaching levels of excellence. The first Asp procedure was carried out in recent days at the Ingrassia hospital in Palermo. The treatment (in the photo a phase of the operation), carried out on a critically ill patient hospitalized in intensive care “with retroperitoneal collection”, was performed by Gioacchino Di Baudo in the second CT room of the radiodiagnostics unit directed by Marco Brancato.

While waiting for the construction of a new dedicated room equipped with a latest generation digital angiograph, the services at the Interventional Radiology Asp of Palermo will be carried out, based on the nature of the CT-guided or C-arm procedure in the operating room, also in Civico di Partinico, Cimino di Termini Imerese and Villa delle Ginestre hospitals. “It is a project strongly desired by the company management – explains Brancato – the Company has invested in a future perspective with a view to best practices for patients and their pathologies. The objective is to reduce clinical risk, patient mobility and the use of services in structures outside the ASP”.
