rains and weather warnings return. Flooding and landslides expected. The areas at risk

It’s raining wet. And it’s worth saying it literally, because after the rains of the last few days that have created flooding in particular in the provinces of Udine and Pordenone, as well as new landslides in an already fragile territory, bad weather will continue to hit still a large slice of Friuli Venezia Giulia. The worst day will be today, when the disturbance will fully hit the same territories as last week, but rain, albeit less violent, is forecast by Osmer Fvg at least until next Thursday.

THE SITUATION

According to the forecast models of the ARPA which immediately sent them to the Civil Protection, the amount of water that could fall today it will settle at around 100 milliliters per liter. These are undoubtedly violent precipitations, but not exceptional. In any case, Civil Protection has extended a yellow alert for today. This, at least in light of last-minute forecasts. One of the important issues is that the rain will fall on an area already filled with water given the fact that the recent rainfall which caused a lot of damage in Veneto and Lombardy, much less in the region, amounted to around 200 milliliters per cubic metre.

THE ISSUES

As already happened last week, also for this disturbance the areas that will be most affected are those of the Pordenone area, including the city, the Azzano area, the San Vito area and the mountainous part of Western Friuli and the Friulian plain where the major phenomena could be concentrated. According to the data in possession of the civil protection, in any case, the greatest riskas has already happened in recent days is that of have a series of floods affecting basements, streets and some first floors of homes linked to the large quantity of water that will fall in the space of a short time, effectively preventing absorption by the sewer networks. Same problem also in the province of Pordenone. Plus they could happen closuresalbeit temporary road closures due to roadway flooding (especially in the afternoon) with the need, furthermore, to block traffic for safety reasons. Even drains and ditches will have difficulty flowing. However, there should be no particular problems for the course of the main rivers which, although still full of water, have already allowed a good part of the load to flow away. Much, however, will depend on two factors: the load of rain that will fall in the mountains and whether there will be a need for the basins, particularly those in Pordenone, to release greater loads of water. According to some estimates, there should still be 14 million cubic meters available in Ravedis before reaching an alarm situation.

LANDSLIDES

A different matter for landslides and mudslides that could occur due to the load of water that will accumulate on top of that which has already fallen in recent days. Landslides that are already underway and which could evolve with the water that falls are constantly monitored, while it is not possible to make predictions for the rest. The road affected by the passage of the Giro d’Italia in the next few days will certainly be under special surveillance and last week was invaded by two rocks that fell from the ridge. The work to free it has already started, but given today’s bad weather we will have to wait to understand if new difficult situations may arise. Uncertainty also in the Pordenone mountains, affected by a landslide last Sunday that knocked the road from Claut to the Pussa refuge offside, blocking access to one of the most popular places for hikers in Val Settimana. It cannot be ruled out, however, that in the next few days the area may pay the bill for these new rains, perhaps with other landslides. It is no coincidence that the Dolomite park, an area of maximum summer tourism, has already been put on alert.
