Armed with a can spray and with the cry of “Allah Akbar” (Allah is great, ed.) ha smearedwith writings in Arabic, the little church dei Santi Medici, in Piazza Caduti and numerous houses in the central Via Marconi, a Martano. The author of the graffiti is a 21-year-old of Senegalese origin who targeted numerous buildings yesterday morning. Due to residence in a municipality other than the one where the young person committed the crimes vandalism has, in fact, prevented the mayor, Fabio Tarantino from taking the necessary measures.

«If the 21-year-old had been a resident of Martano – the mayor said – I could have signed a Tso (compulsory health treatment) and had him hospitalized. This is a person who needs to be helped. I informed and requested the intervention of the prefect and the police commissioner to identify the appropriate channel of action and restore tranquility to the town. Even though he personally has never witnessed such scenes, my fellow citizens have informed me several times that this boy is walking around armed and terrorizing elderly people and children.”
In the past few hours the young man was stopped by the police and transferred to the Lecce emergency room. Shortly afterwards he was released because the law does not provide for arrest in cases of this type. «I must acknowledge, despite myself – the mayor added with regret – that, although my administration has always approached it with a humanitarian spirit of support and solidarity towards those who are far from their country, now the situation is becoming dangerous, we don’t know what do we have to do. Serious action must be taken.”
