The president of Emilia Romagna and president of the Democratic Party Stefano Bonaccini will run in the European elections as the leader of the North East constituency. At this point it is almost certain that early elections will be held in his region, probably in the autumn. He is the second leader of the list made official by the Dems.

Stefano Bonaccini he will be a candidate with the Democratic Party in the next European elections. This was announced by party secretary Elly Schlein: “His ten-year experience as president of Emilia-Romagna and his role as president of the Democratic Party make him a very strong proposal for the battle we must wage and the Europe we want to build” , he wrote in a note. Shortly after, a video of Bonaccini himself also arrived, explaining to the citizens of his Region the decision to run for the European elections on 8 and 9 June.
“It is a choice born from long reflection. For me, they have been ten very important years at the helm of this Region. When I was elected for the first time, in 2014, I was aware of the responsibility I carried on my shoulders”, he recalled. “These were the years of the financial crisis and recession. Furthermore, we had been hit by the dramatic earthquake of 2012. Today, thanks to the extraordinary work we all did together, Emilia-Romagna is the locomotive of Italy”.
Bonaccini’s second mandate would have expired next year, and since the two-term limit for regional presidents remains in force he would not have been able to run for the office again. If he is elected to the European Parliament in June, the Regional elections will therefore take place in advance. Bonaccini also spoke about this: they could take place “reasonably next autumn, ten years after the ones that brought me here”.

The president ensured “an orderly transition, everything is in place so that there are no slowdowns” also in the spending of European funds. Then he returned to talk about his mandate so far: “I have carried out this role with discipline and honor, as stated in our Constitution. Good or bad, it’s not up to me to say, but I guarantee you that I gave everything I could. I don’t I go from Emilia-Romagna, I will never leave here, I will fill my role full time, if I am elected, until the last day”.
Bonaccini is the second leader to be officially communicated by the Democratic Party, after the journalist Lucia Annunziata in the South, who will be followed in the list by the mayor of Bari Antonio Decaro. For the moment, attention has died down on the case of Marco Tarquinio, former director of Avvenire whose possible candidacy had split the Democrats between those in favor and against.
Today the former minister Andrea Orlando confirmed that he will not be the leader of the list in the North West, as Schlein had proposed to him: “I believe that it is right that he continues with the work that I committed to doing when I ran as leader of the list in Liguria in the political elections, that is, that of territorial reconstruction , of presence and political initiative. We must expel the most dangerous and devious right that has ever governed this Region and we must also do it at a national level, but starting from the territorial dimension”.
