Sassari The die has been cast: Giuseppe Mascia is the Dem candidate for the race for Palazzo Ducale. This afternoon the proposal will be brought to the assembly and, immediately after the predictable green light, to the large field table, convened immediately. And there we will see if the alternative name announced by the M5s (“a woman of the highest level”) will arrive and be supported, or if the center-left is full of discussions and tensions.

In the night The definitive unblocking of the long negotiation arrived the day before last night, sealed by a somewhat ecumenical but eloquent note from Mascia himself who, announcing this afternoon’s meeting, underlined: «a unitary and authoritative proposal will emerge capable of proposing a relaunch of the city and the territory”. A unitary proposal that evidently converged on his name, after the painful step backwards of the contender: the former mayor and president of the regional council Gianfranco Ganau.

The step back Even yesterday the Dems were preaching prudence, asking for respect for the rituals of a complex party, where form quickly transforms into substance. But, to give the expected official status to the peace achieved, a long message from Ganau himself finally arrived. «With the unified spirit that has always characterized my political history, I will support in the bodies of the democratic party the candidacy for mayor of the provincial secretary Giuseppe Mascia, who has all the useful characteristics to do well and give the necessary and expected answers to the city of Sassari . My commitment and my support for this difficult undertaking, with a center-right government that shows its true face more every day, will be equal to what the good of Sassari and our country demands of each of us.”

History Then the narration of what has happened in recent days, which gives a clear account of how the former mayor’s choice was painful and not particularly welcome. «I want to thank the many citizens who in recent weeks have expressed their desire to see me as mayor of my city again and again – he explains – which is why, after the decision not to run again in the regional elections, I gave my party my availability for a possible re-nomination as is happening in Cagliari with Massimo Zedda, and in Alghero, in the opposing camp, with Marco Tedde or as happened two years ago in Quartu with Graziano Milia”.

«I did it for the good relationship I have maintained with my city and in the belief that I could give it back the experience gained in the institutional and administrative field – he continues – after 10 years of administrative and political difficulties which made it lose its centrality, role and hope. This is why the contrast that seems to have developed in recent days between my availability and a proposal for renewal does not convince me, it finds me far and away because the path of the people is valid: in all my experiences I have always worked to promote a quality ruling class first of all and, where possible, I have favored the involvement of new energies, as demonstrated by the choice not to go beyond the two mandates in the regional elections”.

The facts «The facts apply, the facts tell us the values that guide us – underlines the former mayor – the interests we defend. And for me, the city, its good and its future come first. For this reason, in order not to risk useless divisions that would benefit other coalitions, to encourage maximum unity of the centre-left, in the wake of Alessandra Todde’s beautiful victory, for a city government that gives new hopes and favors a relaunch of the city’s role and aspirations and territory, which makes listening and sharing on choices the backbone of administrative action, which with reasoned actions helps us rediscover the pride of being from Sassari. I feel the responsibility of taking this decision”.

Generations A decision that effectively crowns Giuseppe Mascia and the group of 40-50 year olds from the Democratic Party (and not only) who have held their ground in complex weeks. Mascia is 48 years old, has a degree in philosophy from the Uniss and a doctorate in Cagliari with a thesis on Martin Heidegger, teacher at the Figari art school, guitarist of Dislocatio Blues and among the animators of the collective exhibition of contemporary art which takes place every year in Molineddu, open-air artistic park in the countryside of Ossi. Part of the first group of Grillini who entered the city council (together with him Maurilio Murru, Desirè Manca and Sofia Fiorillo) in 2014. Movement left, amidst many controversies, in 2015 to join the Democratic Party, in which he earned confirmation as municipal councilor and appointment as provincial secretary. Reformist area, but above all part of that group of councilors who, after 5 years in the trenches in the Palace against the Campus civic leaders, began to claim space and weave a complex web of initiatives and relationships. All on the ticket with Fabio Pinna, who has also long been indicated as a possible mayoral candidate and author, a few weeks ago, of the step aside which seemed to have unblocked the negotiation.

Relationships Relationships that range from the city’s culture, the one that gathered the day before yesterday at the Micro Cafè in Sassari, which coalesced around the bookseller Aldo Addis, author of an incredible performance at the last regional events. But also to entrepreneurship (the candidacy, also successful, of the former president of Confcommercio Pier Giuseppe Canu is enough for everyone) and to the world of schools (with the frontier principal Patrizia Mercuri). But above all relations with that coalition that the Mascia-Pinna duo patiently managed, ultimately finding the convinced and decisive support of Demos, Fortza Paris, Progressisti, Psi and Sinistra Futura. Which also on Tuesday, with negotiations fully underway, struck a blow by asking for “leadership inspired by the principles of renewal, change and inclusiveness”.

And also the opening of dialogue with the Constituent Assembly for Sassari of the former magistrate Mariano Brianda, who will be able to leave again after today’s official coronation.
