The conservation and restoration project of the Balilla fountain in Piazza Crispi was presented at the Brettii and Enotri Museum in Cosenza.

During his speech, the mayor Franz Caruso He expressed particular thanks to the city planning councilor, Pina Incarnatetogether with the President of the urban planning commission, Francesco Turco and to the director of the Brettii and Enotri Museum, Marilena Cerzosowho also took part in the initiative together with Donatella Barcafull professor of Petrography and coordinator of the degree course in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the University of Calabria, in Mauro La Russafull professor of Petrography applied to cultural heritage, also from Unical and the President of the Soroptimist Club of Cosenza, Francesca Stumpo.

«The conservation and restoration project of the Balilla Fountain – said Caruso – entrusted to the extraordinary professionalism of the Department of Biology, Ecology and Earth Sciences of our university, establishes an institutional relationship between the Municipality and the University of Calabria which is more and more cementing. This active and concrete collaboration has already produced excellent fruits for Cosenza and its vast urban area and, above all, it has realized the dream, pursued by many of my predecessors, of opening a degree course in our historic center for which I will never stop being grateful. the sensitivity of the Magnificent Rector, Nicola Leone».

«We have entrusted to the expert hands of the Dibest students, coordinated by their teachers – continued Franz Caruso – one of the most important and beautiful works of our artistic/cultural heritage, which goes beyond what it represented or represents and which it deserves to be preserved and conserved, convinced as I am that art does not and cannot have political colours. In expressing my profound gratitude to these young and brilliant students and their teachers for the extremely valuable work they carry out and carry forward with passion and professionalism, as well as to the Soroptimist Club of our city which puts so much energy into promoting the art and culture, I express my belief that our entire artistic, historical and cultural heritage must be protected and safeguarded, representing the key to development not only for Cosenza but for a vast area, which goes well beyond the narrow confines of the urban one”.

«This is because Cosenza Vecchia, among the most beautiful historic centers in Italy – he said again – is a precious treasure chest of historical, artistic and cultural assets which, together with the Mab, is a natural attractor of visitors which can also become a driver of development for the many municipalities that surround it, from east to west, from north to south, and which are themselves holders, in their historic centres, of small precious jewels. In this context, creating a supply chain, a network of cultural and tourist offers means welcoming and winning the challenge for overall and shared development.”

Mayor Franz Caruso also identified in the meritorious work of the young students of Unical an educational message aimed at respecting public affairs “which – he stated – means having consideration for one’s history and roots. A people who do not remember and respect their past, protecting its memory, is a people who have no future.” (rcs)
