The analogue photography of Sonia Rossi is on display

“Masks, analogue photography – off camera in black and white. Lucigramma” is the photographic exhibition by Sonia Rossi which opens on Saturday 20 April at the Galleria del Carbone, at 6pm.

The exhibition, which has the patronage of the Municipality of Ferrara, will remain on the wall until May 5th with the following times: from Wednesday to Friday from 5pm to 8pm; Saturdays and holidays always from 5pm to 8pm.

Sonia Rossi has been practicing both analogue and digital photography for several years and presents a cycle of fourteen ‘lucigrams’ in medium format on sensitive paper for analogue photography. Her latest research, as Ulrich Wienand writes in the presentation text, “uses point light to draw and paint on photosensitive paper. In the images on display the light source is passed over a scenography previously constructed by the artist mainly with paper and cardboard, placed on photographic paper”.

The artist was born in Bolzano, but lives in Ferrara and is a self-taught amateur photographer. She has been a member of the Fotoclub Ferrara Bfi-Aps since 2019, where she has attended digital and analogue photography courses and workshops. She has been registered with Fiaf (Italian Federation of Photographic Arts) since 2021.

From 2022 it will be applied in particular to experimentation in analogue photography in black and white – off camera (without using the camera), to the effects that can be obtained with figures made with different materials such as paper, wire (filograms), cellophane (cellograms), and others, placed in more or less direct contact with the photographic paper, under the light of the enlarger or with a light source (lucigram).

In particular, the lucigram technique, on which the exhibition is based, uses a point light source to draw/paint on photographic paper. The final effect depends on the intensity and speed of application of the light and the distance of the source from the sheet of paper. The image is revealed with the usual development and fixing process, in the darkroom.

For this reason we ask those who read us every day and, we hope, appreciate us to give us a small contribution based on their possibilities. Even a small amount of support, multiplied by the tens of thousands of Ferrarese who read us every day, can become fundamental.
