Venice, climate activists color the Grand Canal green and red

Two French tourists stranded. It could be a new Extinction Rebellion action

April 19, 2024

Two French eco-activists have carried out a new blitz in Venicepouring into the Grand Canal from a vaporetto on line 1, coming from the Giglio stop and heading towards the Accademia, a substance that colored the water green and red. This was announced by the president of Veneto Luca Zaia.

“I express my strong condemnation of the action taken this afternoon by some climate activists who once again targeted our beautiful city, pouring a coloring substance into the Grand Canal of Venice which dyed the water green and red. Venice has such visibility, particularly in recent days, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Biennale Arte and the numerous collateral events, that gestures like these could become the showcase for similar actions. Venice must be defended and protected, not outraged. And there are many opportunities for dialogue, including on the climate and its changes. Thanks to the police officers, who intervened immediately and blocked the two French tourists, believed to be involved in the action”, we read in a note.
