Incursion of a large group of students in the main hall of the rectorate of the University of Catania to protest against a conference entitled “Gender dysphoria in minors and alias careers in educational institutions: medical, anthropological and legal issues”. The conference is organized by the “Scienza e vita” association and sponsored by the forum of the family associations of Catania and Asp of Catania. The meeting also saw among the participants Senator Binetti, Mayor Trantino, the Archbishop of Catania, as well as doctors and jurists.
“It is shameful, as well as worrying, that the University of Catania hosts a conference with such dangerous content – said Laura di Spine – at the same time, however, Unict declares itself a place of inclusion and against all forms of gender discrimination. We need to clearly distance ourselves from these positions and once and for all not endorse an event that includes associations and personalities well known for their anti-choice and discriminatory positions as the only participants. In fact, the conference excludes the student community and LGBTQ people from the possibility of expressing themselves on the same level, yet we are the ones directly interested in this discussion. Precisely what should be a place of training and growth instead lends itself to discriminatory narratives and against people’s freedom.”
About a hundred students and teachers entered the main hall of the rector’s office and, shortly after the start of the conference, displayed banners and placards with the words “Transphobia out of Unict!” to express their dissent on the initiative and on the role of the University of Catania.
«We have no intention of remaining silent or passively accepting all this – added Laura -. We have said clearly that this conference is not admissible. They tried to hide the attack on the right to live freely of LGBTQ+ people behind a fake presentation, which is why we prevented a discriminatory and transphobic narrative from being promoted as if nothing had happened, as if we weren’t talking about people’s lives and as if they don’t have a say in the matter, it’s unacceptable!”. The conference thus ended early but the students remained in the main hall of the rector’s office in permanent assembly.
