BALLOTS OPEN SUNDAY AND MONDAY

A regional election for around 570 thousand Lucanians with a national weight. On Sunday 21 April, from 7am to 11pm, and on Monday 22, from 7am to 3pm, in Basilicata there will be voting to elect the governor and 20 regional councillors, 13 for the province of Potenza and seven for that of Matera. There are three candidates for the position of president of the Region: the outgoing Vito Bardi (centre-right, supported by seven symbols), Piero Marrese (centre-left, with five symbols) and Eustachio Follia (Volt).

In 2024, the Lucanian one is the third electoral competition, after the victory of the centre-left in Sardinia with Alessandra Todde and the reconfirmation of Marco Marsilio (centre-right) in Abruzzo. In June, on election day with the European elections, we will vote in Piedmont, then towards the end of the year it will be the turn of Umbria, where the election date has not yet been established.
In Basilicata the centre-right coalition for Bardi is made up of Forza Italia, Fdi, Lega, Udc-Dc with Rotondi-Popolari Uniti, Azione, Orgoglio Lucano, La Vera Basilicata; the centre-left one for Marrese from Pd, M5s, Avs-Si-Psi Basilicata Possibile, Basilicata Casa Comune, Basilicata Unita; for Madness the Volt list.

In total, there are 567,959 people entitled to vote, of which 394,643 in the Potentino area and 173,316 in the Matera area and it is a number that goes well beyond the approximately 538 thousand Lucanians in the latest Istat census: in this figure, in fact, several thousand must be considered people living abroad. An element which, consequently, will have a decisive impact on turnout: in 2019 it reached 53.8%, up compared to 47.6 in 2013.

In the 682 sections that will be set up (453 in the Potenza area and 229 in the Matera area) – and which also include four seats in hospital facilities (two in Potenza, one in Matera and one in Venosa) – 279,552 men and 288,407 women will have the right to vote. In the Potenza area there are 194,369 men and 200,274 women, while in the Matera area there are 85,183 men and 88,133 women.
258 people applied for the 20 councilor positions (one of which will be assigned to the gubernatorial candidate who comes second). Separate voting is not permitted. It is possible to express a double gender preference. In 2019, Bardi won with 42.2%, against 33.1% of Carlo Trerotola (candidate from the centre-left), while the M5S reached 20.3% with Antonio Mattia. The first party was the M5S with 20.2, followed by the League with 19.2.
