The Casaeconomia.eu Movement questioned itself – after the 2023 provincial elections – on how to communicate and transmit complex content in the era of the politics of tweets and easy slogans. It was decided to try to find a different, more engaging format and to try cinematographic art. Instead of the classic conference with various experts, slides and interpretations of data and studies, we preferred to experiment with the way of proposing an experience with a film, providing a context and structures, a political commentary leading back to what our reality is.

On the evening of April 18, 2024 in Cles – in the Borghesi Bertolla room – we had the pleasure of screening the film “The Cakemaker” by the Israeli director Ofir Raul Graizer. A film that talks about identity, diversity, growth and context. Film currently not distributed in Italy and whose screening has been granted on an extraordinary basis by whoever holds the rights to the film.

With the Borghesi Bertolla room full, those present were welcomed by the political secretary Michele Dallapiccola while the introduction to the plot and contents of the film was entrusted to the expert Michele Bellio. Following the screening of the film, there were speeches by Guido Trebo, councilor for cultural policies of the Municipality of Arco, by the young Mattia Maccacaro and the political conclusions of Paola Demagri, provincial councilor and president of the Movement.

The film “The Cakemaker” starts from a background of a clandestine relationship of the young protagonist whose beloved suddenly disappears from his life. In search of answers about that disappearance, the protagonist will discover about the death, hence in the process of mourning he will undertake a journey to Jerusalem to discover and learn about a different world and culture. There, Thomas, the young protagonist, will meet the widow with whom he will first establish a professional relationship, with a series of problems due to a series of food regulations, which will later become something more.

This film was a starting point for a discussion: how much do we know our young people? How comfortable are they in their context in practicing a profession, undertaking studies, expressing their affection or interacting with the surrounding world?

As a Movement we are convinced that young people are the present – contingent present that Politics must think about; we oppose the slogan “Young people are the future” because this slogan is often used as an alibi to say “they will arrive later, in the meantime we are here”. Have we ever wondered who the young people are? What do they want? What are the generational differences? What are the problems in the area and what are the social, cultural or economic problems that politics should be interested in?

With “The Cakemaker” we wanted to introduce to the population a series of questions and contexts on the basis of which we will bring a motion to the Provincial Council to give a continuation to these questions. Targeted Social, Cultural and Youth Policies can only be achieved with specific data, with a study of the different Trentino scenarios and with some investment of resources in trying to actually understand what the world of young people and its problems is.

It is our intent to propose the establishment of a “Provincial Observatory for Youth and Social Growth” and to commit the Council to preparing a series of tools to give Trentino Politics the possibility of having a constantly updated picture of what the “our present” and that tomorrow will be “our future too”.
