Region says yes to Catania-Syracuse railway bypass

Favorable opinion on the technical and economic feasibility project of the railway bypass in Augusta along the Catania-Syracuse route. The green light came from the Sicily Region Council, led by the president Renato Schifani. The aim is to reduce travel times. The infrastructure is financed with the resources of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr) and with state funds for an investment of approximately 175 million euros.

The works involve the creation of a new variant of the railway line that connects Messina to Syracuse and the construction of a new station. The work involves the laying of 2.8 km of route to replace the over 7 km of historic line, as well as the elimination of interference with the city’s traffic system.

In detail, the variant begins at km 276+300 of the historic line, just before the via Vitaliano Brancati bridge, and ends at km 283+985, at the entrance to the tunnel. The green light from the Sicily Region will be followed by the closing of the services conference convened by the Italian Railway Network (RFI), which will transform the project into something concrete.
