Copper thefts in Sicily, 3 arrests

The policemen of the Catania Railway, in collaboration with those of Caltanissetta, have arrested three men accused of aggravated theft of copper in conspiracy to damage the railways in the province of Enna.

Investigators had already been investigating for some time a series of thefts of copper cables and other ferrous material used by railways which occurred on the Libertina-Sparagogna section of the Fiumetorto-Bicocca railway line which, to date, are estimated to cause damage of around 165 thousand euros.

To combat the phenomenon, the team of Sicilian police carried out the investigations, also with the support of the images taken by the camera traps installed by Fs Security and thanks to them, last night, they intervened, arresting the three men red-handed.

The officers waited for the thieves to complete the theft and then stopped them along the road in a van loaded with 750 kilos of freshly stolen copper.

The driver of the vehicle will have to answer not only for the theft, but also for the crimes of driving without a license and failure to comply with authority provisions: the man, in fact, had not respected the mandatory expulsion order issued by the police commissioner of Enna a few months ago , precisely on the report of the Caltanissetta railway police.

The suspects turned out to be the same ones that investigators had been focusing on for some time during the investigation.
