In the province of Rimini, as of 31 December 2023, there are 8,366 operating active businesses of the “Commerce” sector which represent 24.3% of the total (21.3% in the region and 25.2% in Italy). Their number is decreasing (-2.8%) in a slightly less pronounced manner than that recorded at regional level (-3.0%) but worse than the national one (-2.1%).

During 2023, 331 registrations were registered in the province against 552 terminations (not automatically), for a negative balance of 221 units. Compared to 2022, both enrollments (-16.4%) and terminations (-6.0%) decreased.

As regards the legal nature, 63.6% are individual businesses, 19.1% joint-stock companies and 17.0% partnerships; compared to 2022, there was an increase in joint-stock companies (+3.0%) while both individual businesses (-4.1%) and partnerships (-4.0%) decreased. Retail trade in particular is characterized by a prevalence of individual businesses (68.5%) and an incidence of 12.5% of joint-stock companies, while wholesale trade is made up of 60.5% businesses individuals and 27.6% of joint-stock companies (to which 71.9% of the employees in this sector correspond).

Companies operating in Retail they represent the majority of the sector (55.5%) and compared to the previous year they decreased by 3.8% (-4.1% in the region and -2.6% in Italy).

In particular, with reference to the main types of specialized shops (incidence of 63.2% on retail trade and variation of -3.4%), compared to 2022 there is, in order of importance, a decrease in most of these: -1.9% clothing stores , -1.5% tobacconists, -4.3% hardware stores, -5.7% shoe shops, -5.2% newsagents, -1.6% pharmacies, -2.5% shops of furniture, -5.7% perfumeries/herbalist shops, -5.9% fruit and vegetable shops, -6.3% florists/pet shops, -9.0% sporting goods shops, -6, 1% distributors, -5.1% butchers, -4.4% fishmongers and -16.0% drink shops. Between non-specialist shopsthose with a prevalence of food products (supermarkets), which represent 7.1% of the retail trade, decreased by 2.4%, and non-food products (department stores and emporiums) fell by -2.9%, which however have a lower incidence (2.8%).

Finally, the companies of trade and repair of vehicleswhich constitute 10.2% of the total sector in the province, recorded a very slight increase (+0.4%), compared to the substantial stability at regional (-0.2%) and national level (-0.1%) .

The employees of Commerce as a whole represent 17.7% of the total number of employees; the provincial companies, then, concentrate 9.4% of the regional employees in the sector. Companies active in the retail trade employ 48.0% of the total workers in Commerce, those in the wholesale trade employ 42.0% and companies active in the trade and repair of vehicles employ 10.0%.

L’economic analysis, drawn up by Unioncamere Emilia-Romagna, given a structurally difficult and very complex scenario which unfortunately has continued for years, shows in 2023 a very slight average increase in retail sales (+0.6%) determined by positive quarterly variations in the first three quarters (especially in the first and third) and by a decrease in the fourth. These variations, however, must be carefully evaluated as 2023 was also characterized by an inflationary push which inflated the value of sales of the various products in a non-homogeneous manner.

In terms of average annual change in 2023, stability is found for retail sales of food products and, substantially, also for non-food products (+0.1%); however, there was an increase (+4.2%) for sales in hypermarkets, supermarkets and department stores.

According to the size of the companies, sales of small distribution (from 1 to 5 employees) recorded an average annual growth of 0.2%, those of medium distribution (from 6 to 19 employees) an increase of 1.6% and finally, those of large-scale distribution (companies with at least 20 employees) grew by 0.6%.
