An original video shot on 20 April 1974, the day of the inauguration of the Monument to the Resistance, shows the crowd of ten thousand people from Savona who took part in the ceremony in Piazza Martiri. On stage the mayor Carlo Zanelli, politicians and administrators of the time, among which the figure of Sandro Pertini stands out, who a few years later would become President of the Republic.

The video of the inauguration shot by Mauro Cerulli, a 19-year-old law student at the time, will be projected on a giant screen mounted in Piazza Martiri on the evening of April 24, immediately after the arrival of the torchlight processions from the neighborhoods, during the mayor’s speech Marco Russo, the speech by Professor Alberto De Bernardi of the University of Bologna and the speech by the student Giulia Gosio of the III D at the Grassi high school to remember the 50 years of a monument and a square that represent one of the symbols of the city.

Furthermore, Fulvio Cerulli’s company intended to offer the city a video projection dedicated to the Resistance on the walls of a building in Piazza Martiri. In the year in which the 50th anniversary of Agenore Fabbri’s monument occurs in Savona, the celebrations for the Anniversary of the Liberation, so deeply felt in the city, are enriched with new initiatives that form a calendar of 4 days all dedicated to the Memory which have been presented this morning in a press conference at Palazzo Sisto by Nicoletta Negro, Councilor for Culture, by Gabriella Branca, Councilor for Education for Active Citizenship and by representatives of the Citizens’ Committee of the Anti-Fascist Resistance of Savona.

“This year – said councilor Negro – we are celebrating a monument which is one of the symbols of Savona, a city that received a gold medal for military valor for the Resistance. The administration works to ensure that the themes of the city’s history are updated through art and new tools, such as festivals, with the aim of intercepting new audiences. The theme of the Resistance is very much felt in Savona, a city with a gold medal for military valour, but to ensure that these values are everyone’s heritage, we are looking for new communication paths that intertwine current themes and ancient rites”.

“For the Citizens’ Committee of the Anti-Fascist Resistance of Savona, reconstituted two years ago – is the comment of Councilor Branca – they will be extraordinary days which will see the participation of all the associations that collaboratively organized the events of the four days involving the citizens, the neighborhoods, in particular that of Oltreletimbro, which has created readings on Freedom that will make a great contribution to reflection on the topic. All the initiatives will find a worthy conclusion with the great event on the Priamar fortress organized by the members Anpi, Isrec, Aned, Arci, Fvl, Cgil, Cisl, Uil and the Sandro Pertini Association, which we truly thank for the great contribution and for the fact of being able to attract an audience of young and very young people every year who also transform Remembrance and Memory into a party”.

The 4th day of initiatives starts on Saturday 20th April at 11am in Piazza Martiri della Libertà, right in front of the Monument, with the performance of Silvia Margaria for the CONNEXXION festival entitled Bandite, created with the collaboration of ANPI and the “A Campanassa” Association and with the participation of the flag-wavers of the Palio Castell’Alfero (AT) Committee.
