ROVIGO – The wars and the uncertain geopolitical situation affect the Venetian and Polesine economies which, despite everything, hold up, but continue to worry the labor shortage, especially in the industrial sector, which will have to be imported from abroad. It is the summary of the import-export numbers of the provinces of Venice and Rovigo in 2023, presented by the Chamber of Commerce in the Mestre headquarters on the occasion of the Made in Italy week. Exports in 2023 in Venice account for 8.2% of the regional total, in Rovigo for 2.2, and together generated exports of 8.54 billion. Data down by 5.1% compared to 2022, but up by almost 23% compared to 2021. In Venice and Rovigo imports decrease by 31.1% compared to 2022, reaching a value of 12.03 billion euros; compared to 2021 there was an increase of 53.9%. The reduction in imports is attributable to the adjustment in the costs of energy goods and the cost of raw materials on international markets.

Imports are decreasing

The flows entering Polesine are decreasing, mainly at the Adriatic terminal, as is the natural gas arriving at the sea platform. Imports are worth 5,091 million: in 2022 there were 9,220 due to the massive influx of methane, in 2021 3,309, therefore despite the boom in gas arrivals due to the Ukrainian crisis, raw materials recorded an increase of 53.9% on 2021. Many of these, compared to last year, increase as to a large extent mining products (+82.1%) then textile products (+24.8%), food (+37.1%), metals (+ plus 36.1%), wood (plus 11.8%), computers and electronic equipment (plus 14.8%), even publishing and audiovisual products with a boom in percentage (plus 237.2), but in figures small, equal to 2 million. In decline there are pharmaceutical products (minus 63.5%), petroleum (minus 28.7%), chemicals (minus 15.9%) and means of transport (minus 9.5%).

Raw material

As regards exports, it stands at 1,809 million, down from 1,901 in 2022 and up compared to 1,677 the year before. In the lead are mining products, which increased by 128.7% in two years, such as refined petroleum products (up 50.4%) and products from waste treatment activities (up 67.4%). Food and beverages recorded an increase of 29.7%, but agricultural products grew by only 1%. Big jump, of 90.4%, for coke and refined petroleum products, while those of metals are up 17.1% and chemicals are up 14.8%. The greatest reduction is on computers (minus 37.7%) and pharmaceuticals (minus 18.9%), with means of transport at minus 14.1% and manufacturing activities in general at minus 21.7%.

The international panorama

Returning to a general picture, the Red Sea crisis, with the attacks by the Houthi militias on ships passing through the gulf of Bab el Mandeb, will be measurable in detail with the data for the first quarter of 2024. As regards exports, the the areas involved, Eastern Asia and the Arabian Peninsula, constitute 7.1% of Polesine exports, for a value of 128 million, with a decrease of 15.8% compared to 2022. The repercussions for imports in the province of Rovigo will be serious , given that these areas represent 54.1% of the overall value, 2.75 billion, and everything is always linked to gas, which has fallen by 53.1%.
