Press conference Friday 19 April at 11.15am at the Dolomiti bar Corso Buonarroti 101.

The trial in the Court of Trento regarding the “rattling” trains involving 55 families from the historic center of Trento has been postponed. At the trial, seven managers of railway companies were brought to trial as responsible for disturbing people’s occupations and rest, a crime provided for by article 659 of the penal code.

At the hearing last Friday 12 April 2024, two opposing consultants of the 7 managers involved (5 from RFI Treni Italia and 2 from external companies) were heard. The hearing was postponed to November 22, 2024 to hear the last witness and the final discussion.

For over 15 years the “livable railway” and “anti-vibration” citizen committees of Corso Buonarroti and Via Fratelli Fontana have been fighting to reduce and contain the problems caused by the speed of freight trains in the city centre. They turned to the Judge in 2019, as a civil party through the lawyer Mario Giuliano, to ask for RFI to be condemned for the damage caused by the vibrations and noise of freight trains with a provisional amount of 40 thousand euros per family. Final compensation will be requested subsequently in civil proceedings. The installation of sound-absorbing barriers near the railway station on the Corso Buonarroti side has not solved the vibration problem, on the contrary it has worsened due to the increase in the speed of freight trains, especially during the night hours. Now the strong oscillations caused on buildings dating back to the 1950s have increased people’s perception of discomfort, causing insomnia problems as well as static problems for the buildings. For these reasons

WE ASK THE AUTONOMOUS PROVINCE OF TRENTO TO TAKE ACTION TO:
Have extensive vibration monitoring carried out by APPA, an “Above the Parties” body that has equipment adequate to the required standards;
Intervene with RFI to enforce the speed regulations for freight train transit in the city centre. Particularly at night, the limit seems to have been well exceeded, as demonstrated by the strong vibrations and noises.
