The “Telegraph” praises Abruzzo: a wonderful land

Abruzzo, a land full of wonders: it is an often underestimated destination, especially by foreign tourists. And this is why the “Telegraph” wanted to tell its incredible beauties, on a journey to discover imposing mountains, dream beaches and lots of good food. L’praise of the prestigious British newspaper aims to encourage tourism towards this fabulous land, which has so much to offer visitors.

The “Telegraph”’s praise of Abruzzo

Not just the splendid Tuscan countryside or the small historic villages of Umbria: there are many other Italian beauties that foreign tourists can discover, and one of the most underrated destinations is undoubtedly theAbruzzo. This region, located not too far from Lazio, is characterized by imposing mountainous areas which, in ancient times, did not allow it to develop a thriving trade or encourage the birth of beautiful cities of art. But things are changing, and Abruzzo finally becomes one destination to be exploredwild and at the same time wonderful.

The mountainous regions of Abruzzo

One of the main views of Abruzzo is that mountainous: some of the most important chains of the Apennines develop on its territory, considered the “skeleton” of the Italian peninsula. The highest point is Gran Sasso, one of the best-known peaks in central Italy, the destination of numerous trekking itineraries. It is here that one of the southernmost glaciers in Europe is located, a true rarity. The Gran Sasso it also hosts a national park which, especially in summer, welcomes many tourists in search of wild nature.

It’s about the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, which also includes the second mountain range of Abruzzo. It is in this fairytale landscape that the panoramic road that leads from Acquasanta Terme to Teramo unfolds, discovering wonderful villages such as Pietracamela. Other great places to explore are Emperor Campthe beautiful mountain village also known as the “little Tibet” (where there are important ski resorts), and Castel del Monte, a lovely high-altitude village, located a short distance from the equally fascinating village of Santo Stefano .

The Maiella National Park, however, unravels around the imposing massif whose name it bears, and is one of the wildest and most uncontaminated areas in Europe. There are few places where you can find a stay, including the village of Caramanico Terme, to stop off before diving in to discover wildlife (such as wolves and bears). Not far away is the city of Sulmona, known for being Ovid’s birthplace and for the production of his famous confetti, which were also chosen for Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. Its market is absolutely worth a visitwhich is held twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Finally, many tourists choose the Abruzzo National Park because it is the closest to Rome, from which it is just 130 km away (easily accessible on the motorway). It is one of the most beautiful and fascinating regions, as well as having a high tourist vocation: it is not difficult to find a place to stop, among hotels and accommodations of all kinds. It is ideal for those who love outdoor sports, cycling or trekking in the mountains. Furthermore there are several villages to explore, such as that of Fish themthat of Opi and that of Scanno, which overlooks a lovely heart-shaped lake.

Dream coast: the most beautiful beaches

Abruzzo is also excellent destination for those who love going to the seaside: its coast, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, boasts several dream beaches that have nothing to envy of the more famous ones. One of the strong points is the fact that they are all well connected, reachable both by car and by train without any difficulty. For those who prefer wild places, in the north of the region there are Borsacchio Nature Reservean enchantment of golden sand that extends to transparent waters, and Torre del Cerrano, which takes its name from the nearby defensive tower with a very long history.

South of Pescara, however, they deserve mention Punta Ferruccio, a splendid town located near Ortona, which is not easily accessible but is absolutely worth it. Calata, where the Turchino beach is located, is also a dream place that many tourists flock to during the summer season. This part of the coast is called Costa dei Trabocchi, and it is a real beauty: they are ancient fishing shacks built on stilts in the middle of the sea, connected to the beach by thin wooden walkways. A rarity that characterizes the Abruzzo region, and which deserves a visit at least once in a lifetime.

Going further south, here is the Casalbordino Lido, another seaside destination well known by tourists. There are many places where you can taste good local food and enjoy the sunset after a long day on the beach. Finally, near Vasto, there are still two beautiful locations, located almost on the border with Molise. I am Punta Penna and Punta Adercitwo wild beaches partly protected by nature reserves: perfect destinations for those seeking relaxation and serenity, without giving up a fantastic sea.

Abruzzo, between food and good wine

Finally, Abruzzo is also good food and fine wine. Although its cuisine is not very famous throughout the world, it boasts some delicacies that leave tourists truly satisfied. Along the coast it is certainly not difficult to find tasty fresh fish, starting from mussels from Vasto, served with local saffron or filled with breadcrumbs, lemon, parsley, garlic and tomato sauce. As for first courses, spaghetti alla guitar, a typical pasta shape from Abruzzo, is particularly well known.

But, as we have seen, the region is almost entirely mountainous: it is therefore the high altitude specialties that conquer the table. Space for mushrooms and the renowned truffle, as well as lamb and mutton. One of the local delicacies? The skewers, lamb and mutton skewers cooked on outdoor grills and also consumed as street food. Finally, the wine: Abruzzo does not boast large vineyards, being a rather wild region, but you can still enjoy a good Montepulciano d’Abruzzo or a high quality Trebbiano.
