Terni, redevelopment of the former ITT educational foundry: the winner of the competition is here

The objective is significant and is worth an economic framework of 2.3 million euros. We will see if and when it will be done, the fact is that the Province of Terni has closed and awarded the design competition for the redevelopment/refunctionalisation of the former teaching foundry of the ITT of Terni: the best was the professional studio linked to the engineer Salvatore Peluso of Cagliari. Second is an architect from Pontecagnano Faiano (Salerno), third is a temporary grouping of professionals from Rome.

The story and the goal

It is a space with a surface area of ​​approximately 570 square meters and a height of over 11 meters with a gross volume of 6,400 cubic meters. «The teaching foundry serving the metallurgy courses was inaugurated around 1959 at the then industrial technical institute of Terni in Viale Brin (today Itt),» we read in the documents. «This structure which guaranteed the training of the sector for many years, as a result of a ministerial reform which abolished the metallurgy course, has no longer been in use for thirty years». The industrial architecture building in reinforced concrete is abandoned but has still fully preserved its original configuration. Now we want to redevelop it for use consistent with school use.

What to do?

Fine, but what’s expected? There is talk of structural adaptation, restructuring of the internal spaces to give «a new interpretation to the production cycle that developed in the foundry with the maintenance of all the equipment and a museum proposal that includes all the activity historically expressed by the institute». Then further areas of service and support with multifunctional value. Complex match: the estimate for the operation is 2.3 million euros, of which 1.7 million for the works alone. For now there is the awarding of the competition.
