COSENZA The last hearing in the Court of Assizes in Cosenza ended with the description of the chosen officer of the Cosenza Carabinieri, Luca Li Preti, of the frames of the videos which recorded the presence of Tiziana Mirabelli – accused in the trial over the death of the 75-year-old from Cosenza Rocco Gioffrè – while entering the victim’s house.
The woman appeared on 19 February 2023, accompanied by her trusted lawyer (the lawyer Cristian Cristiano), at the headquarters of the Carabinieri Company of the city of Bruzi. The crime took place in the woman’s apartment in a public building in via Monte Grappa in Cosenza. This morning, in the courtroom, those videos were made visible to give the parties the opportunity to rewind the tape of that dramatic day and scrutinize any details deemed useful in the proceedings.
The video, the moments preceding the murder
It is Renato Covello, carabiniere of the Cosenza center station, who illustrates the details relating to the video. The period of interest of the frames, approximately 500, is dated February 14, 2023, the day of the murder. The time frame is between 6 and 10.32 that morning. The accused and the victim, Rocco Gioffrè, are seen sitting on the sofa at the latter’s house while arguing. The images have no audio and it is impossible to understand the nature of the dialogue. Before that exchange of words, the witness – requested by prosecutor Maria Luigia D’Andrea – explains the actions carried out by Gioffrè. «He made the bed” it’s located “an ax under the pillow». As the witness will have the opportunity to specify, sleeping with a bladed weapon under the pillow was, for the elderly man, a consolidated habit. At 6.26 Rocco Gioffrè is still alive, it is the last clip that will show him wearing his shirt and going out with something in his hand. According to the reconstruction carried out by Renato Covello it is a shoulder bag, while according to the defendant’s defense it is instead a sweatshirt. «Then found next to the lifeless body».
At 6.46, the accused appears in the video entering the elderly man’s house with a bunch of keys in his hand. A few hours pass, ed at 8.21 Gioffrè, his son Aldo (he lived with his father) and his daughter Francesca enter the house.
The hands of the clock mark 10.32 when the camera’s eye makes clear the figure of Tiziana Mirabelli who once again enters the 75-year-old’s apartment. «He has some things in his hand, a smartphone and some gloves and a bandage on his left hand», underlines the witness while scrolling through the frames with the mouse. At that moment, Gioffrè’s children were present in their father’s house. The crime has already happenedas both the defendant’s lawyer and the public prosecutor reiterated in the courtroom.
The frame of the alleged robbery
What was the woman doing in Rocco Gioffrè’s house at 6.46am? The frames viewed in the courtroom also crystallize an episode which concerns the alleged robbery carried out by Mirabelli at the Gioffrè home. In the previous hearing it emerged that the woman was «exit carrying a black container with an unidentified object inside». The limited visual range of the cameras does not allow investigators to understand where the accused recovered the container.
The woman approaches in front of a mirror and in front of cameras «checks the inside of the container and leaves at 6.48».
