Degradation and insecurity in Arezzo, a question ready for the Mayor

Degradation and insecurity in Arezzo, a question ready for the Mayor
Descriptive text here

The Mayor and his councils have exploited the issue of safety, making the people of Arezzo believe that they can solve the problem in a short time. Almost nine years have passed and instead we find ourselves in a city that is clearly more unsafe and degraded, a city where one is not safe even at 8 in the morning in Sant’Agostino.

Phenomena of crime, violence and urban decay are now the order of the day in Arezzo and this is why I decided to ask the Mayor a series of questions, on the occasion of the next city council meeting on Tuesday 23 April, on the strong sense of insecurity and degradation that pervade the citizens of various areas of the city: the Porcinai Gardens, Piazza Sant’Agostino, Campo di Marte, Piazza della Stazione, the Pionta park, are just some of the places where episodes worthy of the bronx of large cities, even during the daytime, which is theoretically quieter.

And to think that the Mayor, in December 2023 in answering a previous question of mine on this topic, argued in black and white that “The station area, given that the renovation works on the square have been completed, is, in the writer’s opinion, a good business card for tourists arriving in the city, so it is not clear which problems the Councilor is referring to”; and instead for a long time this square too has fallen into decay and incivility to the point that, whoever leaves the train station, finds a camping tent welcoming him which constitutes the “home” of a homeless person, in a city that aspires to be included among the cities of art, at the center of tourist flows, also defined on the website of the Arezzo Community Foundation “A city that creates the social future”. In short, the city is the “treasure chest” of the right “camping”.

The Porcinai gardens, however, have recently and continuously been on the front pages of the local media for various events that occurred there, including the death of a young man about whom not a word was uttered by the Mayor and Council, always ready and punctual in tread the social scene, a little less good in other circumstances. In this case the situation got out of hand and control of this area was completely lost.

In all of this the solutions seem to be inconsistent: they range from actions like the restyling of the Porcinai gardens, which in the best of cases, once – perhaps – they are built in a long time, will offer a more comfortable and modern place to those who already make the gardens their own drug dealing area, at the “fourth shift” of the Municipal Police (from 1 am to 7 am) which, if confirmed, would then inevitably take away forces from the daytime services, weakening them. It would be important, however, to improve the equipment of our agents: from clothing to means of transport, from training and refresher courses to the inclusion of fresh and young forces.

What can we say about the barracks in Via Filzi? A hole in the water in every sense, especially if you think about the Mayor’s ordinance with which he would like to solve the problem of stagnant water. They do everything themselves: they create the problem and solve it. What good competent ones!

Organize public meetings in these areas and not within the usual four walls surrounded by friends and supporters. They have the courage to listen to everyone, and not just those who voted for them.

Michele Menchetti – Municipal councilor
