In the city, 312 trees at risk of collapse: the knot of rows along the avenues
Descriptive text here

A few days ago the Priula Consortium approved the plan for the management of the greenery of the Municipality of Treviso.

A plan that highlights the many interventions made, but also the many to be done, first of all on the cuts front. Of the 22,338 plants registered, 312 are at high risk of collapse, and to these are added over 4000 “at moderate risk”.

The numbers

Compared to the whole they are a small part. But a part that must be kept under close surveillance because it represents an even more potential risk if close to vehicular or pedestrian traffic, as in the case of via Battisti.

There the two historic rows of maritime pines have been at the center of a seemingly endless debate for years. The agricultural technicians agree in defining them as problematic at the very least, and have repeatedly advised Ca’Sugana to cut. An opinion also suggested with the latest report which talks about the «precarious state of conservation of the 42 pine trees, of which 30 are in class C prone to failure», i.e. moderate.

But the Municipality continues to stall, and although it expects to start (in July) the redevelopment project of the street with excavations and arrangement of the platforms (now not passable due to the lumps made by the roots, a sign warns that most people ignore), wait before giving a clear verdict. But it is only one of the problems highlighted by the census.

The avenue node

«It would be necessary to define and share forms of management for the city’s tree-lined streets» explain the technicians, «which take into account the state of affairs and the real potential for future development of the trees, taking into serious consideration the progressive renewal of treespossible replacements of plant species and the correction and redesign of some road sections”.

The study highlights how some rows along the city streets are “problematic”, due to the space they occupy, the type of maintenance, the problems caused by their growth (as in the case of via Cesare Battisti).

«Some very problematic roads in this sense are the tree-lined streets of Città Giardino (Via Filzi, Via Giacomelli etc.) with large trees forced into small road sections and very limited spaces for roots and foliage» is written in the report.

But what follows is more weighty: «On tree-lined avenues a comparison is required. Below is the list of plant species to be replaced and problematic road/beach areas with respect to management: «via Pasteur; via Feltrina; via Castagnole; viale Vittorio Veneto and viale Brigata Treviso with long rows of plane trees as well as some promenade trees; and to follow viale Felissent.”

But a reasoning, the technicians explain, should also be made on via Alzaia (Restera) where some trees are problematic for the bank, as for the city walls where the battle against the colored cancer has been fought for some time.

And it couldn’t be missing Putwhere many trees have already been cut down and replaced over time, but where it is urgent (or would be urgent) to make a general evaluation of the intervention.

The park of Villa Manfrin

The plan for the monumental park of Villa Manfrin-Margherita was also raised in the city council.

After the pruning carried out ten years ago and the subject of violent controversy, the Conte council had announced a valorisation plan for which, however, it had not managed to intercept the funds. “We are participating in other projects” was said, but nothing more was heard of it
