A project between Marche and Umbria connects thirteen municipalities

The memorandum of understanding onThe ancient Via Clementina will be signed on April 23rd. The idea is to enhance an area rich in art and nature

Marche and Umbria, 18 April 2024 – In the name of Pope Clement XII, thirteen Municipalities of Marche and Umbria will collaborate to enhance the extraordinary Via Clementina, on the tourist, cultural, food and wine and historical level, in the stretch that starts from Nocera Umbra and arrives at the mouth of the Esino, to continue to the port of Ancona.

For this reason, an indispensable Network Agreement is being renewed today to formalize this important project of valorisation and promotion of the entire road route, through a suggestive territory of great naturalistic, landscape, historical and religious interest, characterized by towns rich in art, areas green and wooded areas, waterways and springs, which represent the places of excellence of Umbria and Marche and of the Esino river valley, which joins the Adriatic sea.

It is no coincidence, therefore, that it was decided to also involve the Port System Authority of the Central Adriatic Sea for the official presentation and signing of the memorandum of understanding. The signing ceremony will be conducted by the Tourism Councilor of the Municipality of Ancona, project leader, Dr. Daniele Berardinelli, and will be attended by the Mayors and Councilors of the Municipalities involved, as well as by the teachers of the Department of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Marche and the Department of Geography of the University of Perugia and Tuscia of Viterbo, who will support the studies and research on the interested territory.

This project was born thanks to the idea of local scholars and researchers gathered in the Via Clementina Laboratory and Centro Sociale il Faro, united by the interest in the development and greater knowledge of a central segment of our central territory, the one between the Apennines and the sea, rich in tourist potential, but little appreciated as an integrated system.

The route can only reach the port of Ancona, where since 1733 the Via Clementina, specially arranged by Pope Clement XII – whose statue adorns the most beautiful city square called the “Plebiscito” – has since then been a vehicle for goods of all types, people and drinking water, who would then continue their journey towards the East, beyond the Adriatic.

It is due to the resourcefulness of this pontiff that he gave rise to an important and strategic communication infrastructure artery in central Italy, which according to the original intentions should have connected the port of Civitavecchia on the Tyrrhenian Sea with that of Ancona, which in the meantime had been made a “free port”. ”.

The pontiff then called the great Luigi Vanvitelli to design and carry out expansion works, a commitment carried out with great effectiveness by the famous architect. In fact, Vanvitelli extended the pier built by Emperor Trajan and created a large pentagonal artificial island on the south side on which he built the new Lazzaretto, a truly multifunctional structure ever since.

The Via Clementina project would like to be inspired precisely by this great idea of connection and multifunctionality of the territory, in a broad vision that intends to ideally connect our Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas.
