“1 euro each”. The sad end of wheelchairs

The story of the infamous wheelchairswho are competing for the Oscar of idiocy expressed by the triad with the obligation to wear masks outdoors Conte-Speranza-Arcuri, comes back into fashion quite sensationally. It seems, in fact, that the Municipality of Bagnoli di Sopra, a small town in the Padua area, has requested and obtained a hundred of these foolish tools designed to limit infections. Accepting the offer of the Province of Padua, which had stored around 600 in its warehouses, the same municipal administration paid out, so to speak, the symbolic sum of one euro each. In a nutshell, considering that each desk cost the usual Pantalone, aka Italian taxpayer, around 150 euros, this is a colossal saving, as well as yet another Covid-19 investment that literally ended up down the toilet.

But at least in this case the desks will serve some useful purposeas he explained to Morning in Padua Mayor Milan, who was actually looking for some seats to equip a large meeting room inside the disused San Siro military base: “They are new chairs, never used, certified, and certainly suitable for our purpose. With this supply – he added – we will reach 400 seats. If they had been bought new we would have spent much more.”

However, contrary to what many newspapers and online sites have headlined, the Province itself has disclosed the following note which, however, in our opinion does not greatly change the underlying issue, linked toreckless use of public money during the pandemic: “It is not a sale, but rather a loan for use. Contrary to what has emerged in recent hours, the Province of Padua has not sold the wheelchairs to the Municipality of Bagnoli di Sopra. The assets in question were granted on loan for use to the Municipality. If the Provincial body wanted to sell these or other assets, it would have to sell them by auctioning them. The symbolic price – we read again in the note – of one euro for each wheelchair was established precisely because it is a loan for use for a temporary period and not a sale.”

In short, if it’s not soup it’s wet bread, suggesting that the loan formula was chosen to more easily get rid of the cumbersome burden on wheels. Also because, it must be added, I don’t believe that in the event of a public auction, there would have been a crowd to buy one of the most significant symbols of a viral madness lasted over three years.
