Venice is preparing to host other students to respond to the great demand for rent from ‘off-site’ university students. How will he do it? By making available Ater apartments that have become available over the years and have not been reassigned, remaining empty.
The initiative was loudly presented today by ATER and IUAV announcing “an innovative agreement for the development of vacant apartments in the historic center of Venice”.

The comunication.
“The Iuav University of Venice and the Territorial Company for Residential Construction of Venice (ATER Venice) have signed an unprecedented agreement in the field of valorisation of public residential buildings. The project, desired and shared by the rector Benno Albrecht and the president Fabio Nordio, aims to transform a considerable number of vacant apartments into precious resources for the community by intervening in the broader Venezia Città Campus project: a city that is reborn and reinvents itself as a center of knowledge and excellence capable of attracting, training and retaining young talents with advanced knowledge, through the quality of the training offer and research, but also of related services in the context of an inclusive, modern and sustainable community”.

“There are more than 200 apartments owned by ATER located in the historic center of Venice, not bound to assignments through rankings, as they are not subject to the Public Residential Building regulations. The initiative brings together the strategic objectives of Iuav and ATER: to redevelop and enhance this important heritage and at the same time promote the residency of students, teachers and researchers, Iuav’s technical-administrative staff, but also of other categories of public employees who serve in the historic center of Venice, such as operators in the health, public security and social sectors, respecting the peculiarity of the urban context of Venice”.

“The proposal has already obtained the green light from the decision-making bodies, the Iuav Academic Senate and the Boards of Directors of Iuav and ATER. The initiative will start from a multidisciplinary scientific study, coordinated by Iuav, which will develop a concrete proposal and an evaluation of the medium and long-term effects of this urban-wide housing project involving the ATER real estate assets, also providing for the creation of experimental samples starting from a pilot group of properties”.

“It is an unprecedented project, certainly one of the most extensive in the field of redevelopment and valorisation of public residential buildings – declared Benno Albrecht, rector of the IUAV University of Venice. The collaboration with ATER will immediately allow detailed mapping of the properties, carried out by a team of highly qualified IUAV researchers, and the development of a short and long-term operational plan that will allow us to get the project underway as soon as possible. We know that current conditions tend to discourage workers from settling in Venice: with this initiative, which is part of the institutional aims of our two bodies, we want to reverse the trend, thus finally managing to retain qualified public professionals within the lagoon city”.

“Today we add another fundamental piece to that process of institutional synergy that began more than a year ago with the Venice police headquarters”, urges the President of Ater, Fabio Nordio. “We are convinced that only through the close collaboration and joint commitment of the main players of this wonderful city will we be able to give an effective response to the redevelopment of our priceless real estate assets in the historic center of Venice”.
