CROTONE – An important life-saving surgery was performed in Crotone in recent days on a patient at very high anesthetic risk, with considerable contraindications compared to general anesthesia. The patient, a young woman who has undergone a heart and lung transplant, suffering from significant respiratory diseaseshad been denied the operation, although necessary, in several specialist centers in Northern Italy, on the grounds that general anesthesia would have constituted a serious risk.

At San Giovanni di Dio in Crotone, however, it was possible to carry out the important operation, thanks to the “awake anesthesia” and to the surgical team composed of doctors Mimmo Galea and Serena D’agostino and the anesthetist Tommaso Sorrentino. Doctor Sorrentino, in particular, is the scientific promoter, in the Pythagorean city, of these very modern techniques of local-regional anesthesia, performed in very few Italian centers. The patient in question, meanwhile, has been discharged and is well.

Satisfaction for the important result achieved was expressed by the Extraordinary Commissioner of the ASP of Crotone Antonio Brambilla, as “awake anesthesia” represents a best practiceallowing the patient to undergo abdominal surgery without resorting to general anesthesia and ensuring a very rapid recovery. A technique that has been a reality and an opportunity available to all users in Crotone for about a year noweven more so than patients considered “at risk”, as they suffer from particular pathologies.
