A 37-year-old centaur, Michele Angelillo, lost his life today, Thursday, in a accident under the Laziale tunnel which connects Fuorigrotta with Mergellina. According to an initial reconstruction the man would have lost control of the vehicle he was driving, a Honda SH 300, and would have been thrown to the ground. At that point a car that was proceeding towards Piazza Sannazaro like him would have hit him.
Apparently the centaur was in the process of overtaking of other vehicles. An oncoming Peugeot 208 hit the victim. The 118 doctor who responded to the scene has only able to confirm his death. The driver of the Peugeot, a 68-year-old man, was taken to hospital for tests on biological fluids. The vehicles were seized and the body placed at the disposal of the judicial authority.
Attempts to rescue the victim were futile. Municipal police and carabinieri have traffic blocked and the tunnel closed to allow investigations and clarify the exact dynamics of the accident. Traffic was immediately affected throughout the city center: another difficult day for motorists after yesterday in which the port gates were closed for safety reasons due to the G7 in Capri.
