L’AQUILA – On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the earthquake that hit the territories of L’Aquila on 6 April 2009, the Order of Engineers of the province of L’Aquila will host the Assembly of the Presidents of the Orders and the National Council of Engineers of Italy from 18 to 20 April.
“We would have liked to host this event close to the tenth anniversary of the earthquake of April 2009 – confides the President of the Order of L’Aquila, Eng. Pierluigi De Amicis – but the problems related to Covid and the consequent suspension of in-person events have postponed this occasion to today”.
“And the event will take place in a city that still shows the wounds of the earthquake, but in which the evidence of the stubbornness of a population that lives with a harsh and harsh territory and with determination tries to overcome all the difficulties is evident. The reconstruction work carried out so far is giving us back a city rich in historical-cultural stratifications that bear witness to its past greatness and which oblige it to reinvent an innovative and peculiar future”.
Technical visits are also planned on Friday morning in the Historic Center of L’Aquila to the major monuments and reconstruction sites accompanied by professional guides and officials of the Superintendence of L’Aquila. A tour with guide and shuttle was also organized for companions in the Lands of Baronia in the municipalities of Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Rocca Calascio.
“The occasion – continues the President – offers us the pleasure of paying homage to the participants of a brand new publication, published with the contribution of the Order of Engineers of the Province of L’Aquila, which celebrates the precious structure designed by Renzo Piano immediately after the earthquake and built, close to the red zone, in just six months precisely to symbolize the desire of the entire community to reclaim the spaces close to the historic center of the city”.
“With the reconstruction, to which is added the coveted proclamation as City of Culture, L’Aquila is trying to give back to the Municipalities of the district what it received on the occasion of its foundation. The reconstruction of the capital, for obvious reasons, began and progressed certainly more quickly than that of the hamlets and municipalities of the Crater. Nonetheless, the synergies implemented for some time are aimed at the development of the territory precisely with a view to creating a city-territory that forcefully emerges from the city walls”.
