Good evening and welcome to the LIVE LIVE of game 1 of the final of the 2023-2024 volleyball Super League playoffs between Sir Susa Vim Perugia and Mint Monza. On the one hand there is the most awaited team, winner of all the tournaments she participated in this year; on the other, there is the high-level “rookie” team that aspires to make a splash at the first attempt. Sir Susa Vim Perugia and Mint Monza compete for the volleyball title in an unprecedented final. For Perugia, it is the eighth playoff final, with only one victory so far out of six lost finals, and the sixth final in the last ten years. On the other hand, it is the first ever final for the Brianza team, even if it is not the first time they have found themselves in this situation this season: Mint was a finalist for the first time in the Italian Cup, where they lost 3-1 against Perugia.
Perugia has already won the Super Cup, the Club World Cup (the only international tournament this year, given that it did not participate in the European Cups), and the Italian Cup. Now only the championship is missing, which president Sirci’s club has been chasing since 2018. Even the coaches in the final are not tied: it is the first for Massimo Eccheli from Monza, while for Angelo Lorenzetti it is the ninth final, but with four different clubs. Lorenzetti aims to replicate last championship’s success with Trento, even if this time he is absent from the final.
There are many intriguing themes surrounding this challenge. One of the main ones is if Perugia’s patience will be able to counter Monza’s effectiveness, which seems to have found the right structure with the change of formation made by Eccheli, who has lined up as starters the three attacking receivers: the Canadians Loeppky and Maar and the Japanese Takahashi, leaving opposite starter Szwarc on the bench. This choice made the Brianza team a lot effective in second line fundamentals and it surprised even very strong teams like Itas. On the other hand, Perugia brilliantly surpassed Milan, demonstrating great self-esteem and determination.
Perugia is certainly the favorite for this match, both for the home advantage and for the victories in previous matches, especially in the final of the Italian Cup. However, Monza is a team capable of putting any opponent in difficulty. Perugia will take the field with Giannelli as director, Ben Tara as opposite, Russo and Flavio Gualberto as centre-backs, Plontnytskyi and Semeniuk as forwards, and Colaci as libero. Monza will respond with Cachopa as director, Loeppky as opposite, Di Martino and Galassi as centre-backs, Maar and Takahashi as forwards, and Gaggini as libero.
