In Rimini party for the 90th birthday of Pino Tomasetti, a life for politics

Ninety years is quite a milestone to reach. And Giuseppe got there well: it’s easy to see him riding around the city or in his neighborhood, V PEEP, on a bicycle. Or “meet” him on social media or in the PD Club chat. Informed, active, present. For him, politics, as a militant or as a leader, was the bread and butter of his life. From when I was a boy to today. His cursus honorum is extraordinary: for over sixty years he was involved in leading roles in the party and public administrations.

Tomasetti was born in Tavullia (PU) on 19 April 1934 into a large family of sharecroppers (there were 18 of them). A branch of the Tomasetti family moved to San Giovanni in Marignano in 1945 when Giuseppe was 11 years old. Combining hard work on the farm with his family, he joined the FGCI of San Giovanni in 1950 (and was its Secretary from 1953 to 1955) and the PCI in 1952. Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s he participated, as leader of the PCI or the CGIL, to the numerous peasant struggles for the overcoming of sharecropping, the modifications of the colonial agreements, the improvement of the living conditions of the peasants in the Conca Valley. He was secretary of the San Clemente Chamber of Labor in 1955. Then he left for the military. Upon his return in 1957 he became secretary of the Valconca PCI (until 1965). In April 1965 the General Secretary of the CGIL of Rimini Vito Nicoletti called him to Rimini and he entered the Secretariat of the provincial CGIL, as head of Federmezzadri, one of the most important and strongest categories of the Rimini CGIL. He remained there until September 1968. He left the CGIL to join the Farmers’ Alliance until 1979 when he contributed to establishing the Italian Farmers’ Confederation (CIA).

At the municipal elections of 6 November 1960 in San Giovanni in Marignano he was elected councilor on the PCI lists and reconfirmed in those of 22 November 1964 (until 7 June 1970). From 1960 to 24 June 1966 he was part of the councils of Mayors Duilio Migani (PSI) and Guido Donati (PCI).
In 1966 he moved with his family to Rimini. In 1964 he married Maria Orecchini. From their marriage two daughters were born, Catia and Susanna. Today Giuseppe also has two grandchildren.

In the municipal elections of 7 June 1970 the PCI of Rimini nominated him and Tomasetti was elected, taking over from Quinto Maioli on 22 September 1970. On 20 June 1974, Mayor Nicola Pagliarani joined the council, replacing Francesco Alici, with responsibility for social services and municipal utilities. Re-elected in the elections of 15 June 1975, he returned to the Council, first with Mayor Nicola Pagliarani and then with Mayor Zeno Zaffagnini, with delegations to Sport and then to private and subsidized construction and finally to urban planning.

For ten years Tomasetti was in the provincial council in Forlì with responsibility for the environment and territory. In 1985 and 1986 he was also vice-president.

He was then President of the Marecchia Reclamation Consortium and twice a member of the Board of Directors of AMIR.
He was a member of the Federal Committee of the PCI of Rimini, co-opted as secretary of Valconca in 1957, and elected from the 5th Congress (15-17 January 1960) until the last Congress of the PCI, the 17th (from 11 to 13 January 1991), and then became part of the governing bodies of the PDS, DS and PD.
