“Independently together” – The house of the teacher Beatrice Bratti, donated to the municipality, will become a gym for independent living

Massa Martana, 17 April 2024 – Independent living and disability were at the center of the meeting “Autonomously Together – Experiences and perspectives in Umbria” which was held at the Consortium theater in Massa Martana promoted by the municipal administration with the support of the Perugia Foundation, and the organizational support of the consultancy company Sinloc – Local Initiative System, which provided Technical Assistance to the project: “After Us – Let’s go to Casa Bice”.

Everything comes from the will of the dear and generous fellow citizen Beatrice Bratti (died in 2021) who donated her home to the municipality of Massa Martana, with the constraint that it be used to help the elderly or people in need.

“Casa Bice” is a symbolic place of the village of Massa, a villa donated to the administration and destined to become an «independent living gym», in which people with disabilities will be able to «train», through personalized paths, to reach a level of autonomy such as to allow an experience of continuous residence outside the family.

The “Autonomamente Insieme” conference served to open a discussion to explore projects aimed at raising awareness of public and private social bodies on personalized independent living projects and at creating a network of actors who can deal with programming and services to support people with disabilities . From the conference it emerged that “after us” comes from “after living with us” because independence is a process of trust between families, operators and a personalized project for the disabled person.

During the meeting some good examples were presented such as that of the Social Enterprise Consorzio Girasole of Lecco of the Centro Speranza of Fratta Todina, FISH Umbria, Fondazione Dopo di Noi “La Crisalide” of Orvieto, La Bottega Azzurra Società Cooperativa Sociale of Gubbio, Polis Social Cooperative Society of Perugia. The municipal administration wanted to promote this moment of sharing and discussion on the good practices to be implemented in favor of people with disabilities, so as to open a dialogue which, starting from the experiences of the people directly involved and their families, can lead to a concrete project useful to make “La Casa di Bice” a virtuous concrete example that can be replicated for all welfare and health operators”

Jessica F. Silvani, Manager of the Non-Profit segment of Sinloc (Local Initiatives System) which supports local institutions and non-profit organizations in projects for the use of national and European financial resources, explained: “The independent life of women and men with disabilities constitutes in our country, still today, a great challenge: it is about achieving a huge cultural change of pace, even before organizational-management and economic-financial sustainability. A challenge that can be won by working together, or by creating synergies between public bodies, philanthropic actors, third sector bodies, families and even private citizens, like Mrs. Bice.”
