Wind gusts of 50-60 kilometers per hour in the afternoon, with collapsed trees, traffic disruption and difficulties for lagoon traffic. About eighty requests for help arrived at the fire brigade station in a short time, due to the strong bad weather that hit the whole of Veneto, after the record heat of last weekend. Late in the evening in Mestre, along Viale San Marco, technicians were still working on the overhead lines of the tram, which had been blocked due to a large trunk falling on the overhead cables.
The weight of the shrub did not crush them and after a few hours the AVM technicians were able to proceed with the checks, once the intervention of the firefighters was finished. Shaky scaffolding, unsafe cornices, detached signs and advertising posters, like the one in the Basilica della Salute which made it necessary to suspend the Avm Actv vaporetto stop, for safety. Inconveniences for navigation, mostly delays, problems in docking at the landing stages and vehicles waiting between Sant’Elena and the Lido to give priority in non-optimal navigation conditions to all the boats that have entered the single lane, the safest one, to advance in the lagoon.
From 5pm onwards the port suspended merchant traffic in Marghera and Malamocco and in the historic center several interventions were carried out on the plexiglass panels detached by the wind which at times blew very strongly, causing small collapses of the buildings. There are also many requests for emergencies along the seaside resorts, where campsites and outdoor venues are being set up for the summer. Even in Chioggia, at the port and on the beaches, with the light of dawn, the damage from the sea storms and the erosion of the coasts lashed by the stormy sea due to the strong winds will be counted. Problems on the inland roads where trees and branches felled on the roads invaded the carriageways, blocking them and in one case, in Spinea, smashing the roof of a car in via Prati, without consequences for the people in the passenger compartment. In the evening the firefighters tried to conclude the most urgent interventions, with the support of the local police and civil protection volunteers, postponing operations that were impossible to complete in the dark until Wednesday. Some inconveniences were also recorded at Venice airport during landings and take-offs.
