Road to Catania: we will talk about disabilities

The theme of disability has always been one of the topics that animates discussions in the medical, legal, social security and welfare fields, a richness of our Discipline which, by re-appropriating its own terminology as an etymological essence and substance, adapts and reshapes it in light of the new needs of the human being and legislation.

The topic touches on one of the most humanizing spheres in the establishment of social relationships and in the realization of those fundamental rights that our Constitution places at the foundation of civil coexistence, which goes far beyond the spirit of solidarity: it concerns the realization of the self when it has failed the psycho-physical integrity of the person.

The Italian Society of Forensic Medicine has always given ample space to the topic, both with the elaboration of position paper on disability (you see)both recalling the indications recently provided by the UN (you see).

Appointment on June 7th

On June 7th in Catania, in Sala Pegaso 2, the issue will be discussed in the session “How INPS will address the problems of the disabled person based on the new law 227/21 and subsequent implementing decrees”.

The procedures for the basic evaluation and recognition of disability conditions will be discussed, highlighting the need to resort to different skills, but above all the medical-legal method and criteria for recognizing the status of disabled person in harmony with current legislation. . All always from a critical perspective, where our Discipline is the bearer of the technical-scientific balance to guarantee an evaluation methodology that is able to enhance the person and at the same time realize that principle of justice present in the bioethical criteria of Tom Beauchamp and James Childress, having to take into consideration that the system we live in is resource-limited.

From the School of Medicine and Surgery over which the eyes of Santa Rosalia watch, Professor Argo, one of the authors of the SIMLA position paper on disability, will speak on 7 June in the Pegaso 2 Room, anticipating that: “The round table will allow us to verify in a critical and constructive way how much of the new regulatory framework on disability protects the person, and also whether new medical-legal assessment tools are necessary”.

It will certainly be a challenging session, but ultimately today’s Forensic Medicine is ready for the challenge: the balance will find the right balance between the identification of adequate and “right” criteria for the realization of a subjective, constitutionally protected right, and the limit of the resources of our system?

This too will be discussed in Catania.
