L’accident it happened on the morning of Tuesday 16 April: when the firefighters arrived on the scene, around 11.10 am, they saw the truck with a dented nose and deformed side and a pile of debris: the front porch from the little church Of St. John Baptist placed at the beginning of Marosticana road to Vicenza there is no more.
Truck hits church: portico destroyed
The driver and a passenger of the truck were injured in the collision. The damage was extensive, both to the building and to the heavy vehicle, but fortunately the two injured people who were immediately rescued are not in serious conditions.
The heavy vehicle was traveling towards the center of Vicenza then, for reasons still under investigation, ended up on the opposite side of the road, devastating the portico.
The red circle indicates the area of the crash: the small church of San Giovanni Battista is located in the northern outskirts of Vicenza, at number 44 of the Marostica road (also known as provincial road 248).
During the collapse, the porch fell onto the side of the truck which was loaded with bricks and which tilted causing extensive damage. The rubble crushed the load of the vehicle.

The firefighters made the area safe. The two occupants of the truck managed to get out of the passenger compartment without needing help.
The two injuries are not serious
Both passengers of the heavy vehicle were taken care of by the health personnel of the Suem (Medical Emergency Service). Their conditions are not of concern.
The vehicle recovery operations lasted for a few hours. The Vicenza traffic police are investigating the reconstruction of the accident.

Among the most accredited hypotheses, that of mechanical failure (which will have to be refuted by a possible expert opinion on the vehicle) and that according to which the driver lost control for a reason yet to be clarified. An attempt is made to reconstruct the speed of the vehicle at the moment of impact.
