Not an easy year but equally full of initiatives in Italy and abroad to promote and protect a fruit and a brand, the PGI Sicilian Red Orange, increasingly appreciated and recognized by markets and consumers.
During the annual members’ meeting, the president of the Consortium for the protection of blood oranges outlined the balance sheet, not only economic, of a chiaroscuro marketing season, which will end soon for the fresh product. of Sicily PGI Gerardo Diana. During the assembly Diana remarked how “despite the difficulties, largely due to the dry climate dictated by global warming, we managed to have positive feedback from our historic buyers and our loyal consumers”.

The activities carried out

Among the activities carried out by the Consortium, the president of the Consortium mentioned participation for promotional purposes in big fairs Italian and international sectors such as the Fruit Attraction in Madrid, the Fruit Logistics in Berlin, the Cibus in Parma and the Macfrut in Rimini. The Consortium will participate in the latter two next May.

“We have broadened the field with the second participation in Vicenza oro and Milano fashion & jewels, non-sector fairs but very precious opportunities for collaboration and prestigious showcases, both for fresh fruit and for juices. – said Diana – The one from collaboration with other excellences Italian and foreign is a path that we still intend to follow. Participation, a few days ago, in the first Menton International Citrus Show confirmed to us that the PGI Sicilian Blood Orange is a versatile fruit, ready for a thousand uses in cooking, drinks and desserts. A quality to be valorised without stopping”, continued the president of the Consortium.

Worries

“Unfortunately, over the last few months there has been no shortage of concerns about the arrival of new plant diseases potentially lethal for our citrus cultivation. We have reported, on several occasions, the arrival in Europe of batches of infected citrus fruits from non-EU countries and we have encouraged the institutions several times to keep watch, control and place phytosanitary and commercial barriers. We will continue to do so hoping to be listened to, because the survival of an entire sector is at stake. We have done and will do the same to resolve the problem of Drought and water distribution. An increasingly precious resource on which those with administrative, technical and political responsibilities have the duty to act promptly”, concluded Diana.

The vice president of the Consortium also focused on the difficult season from a marketing point of view Salvatore Scrofani. “We have a duty to continue working while looking to the future with optimism. It will not be easy to guarantee high revenues for the entire supply chain but it is our task to work to always do better”, said Scrofani.

The Consortium’s budget

Returning to the numbers, those of the Consortium’s balance sheet continue to be positive. The approval was in fact unanimous. The auditor illustrated the guidelines of the accounting document Riccardo Di Stefano and the manager of the administrative area of the Consortium Salvatore Milluzzo.

“The salient and most relevant factors of this budget for the commercial aspect concern a continuum increase in revenues deriving from the supervisory activity due to use of the name, consequence of theincrease in labels and authorized companiesother revenues obtained thanks to the application of theerga omnesi.e. the possibility of calling on producers who are not members of the consortium but registered with the control body to contribute towards the costs of promotion and supervision activities”, said Di Stefano.
“Another important aspect is having implemented the supervisory activities carried out in favor of as many as eight other consortia with conventions which allow us to invoice this activity and have a return both in terms of prestige and from an economic point of view, so much so as to allow the Consortium to hire a permanent resource”, he concluded.
The new hire is Dr. Lucia Fidelio, who has already been a qualified consultant to the Consortium for years. Fidelio passed the selection to participate in the “Executive master director of the Protection Consortium”, organized by Origin Italia, which she is currently attending.

“We have also worked a lot in perspective, just think that today the consortium manages projects for approximately 330 thousand euros, of which 250 thousand euros obtained with measure 3.2 of the Sicily Region”, explained Milluzzo. “The Consortium is also included in a European project, called Dyonisus, which will bring approximately 250 thousand euros to the Consortium. The president and the board of directors have implemented prudent management and are allowing these projects to be carried forward, having made the choice not to take out suretyship policies and not to ask for special contributions from the members”, concluded Salvatore Milluzzo. Consultations to elect the president of the Consortium will be held on May 16th.
