Three routes, along the Oltrarno walls, around Porta San Gallo and around San Miniato al Monte
The appointment with her is back Heritage Walks in Florence, program of routes developed by the Florence World Heritage and Relations with UNESCO Office of the Municipality of Florence and MUS.E through the Firenze Forma Continua project.
Why patrimonial? Because they take place within, or close to, the Historic Center of Florence World Heritage site – or in the area defined as Core Zone – whose perimeter, traditionally identified with the circuit of the ancient circle of the fourteenth-century walls which was expanded in 2021 until reaching San Miniato al Monte.
The itineraries, departing on Saturday 30 March, will lead visitors to discover the lesser-known areas of the historic center, suggestive architecture, views and stories of Florence and to deepen their knowledge of the city, the urban fabric and the landscape areas that contribute to the universal value of the site. The Historic Center of Florence was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list because “a unique creation of its kind, a masterpiece of work, the result of a continuous creation lasting over six centuries”, its cultural enjoyment is too often limited to monuments main and most famous streets.
And it is precisely starting from this perimeter – today still witnessed by the gates, towers, fortresses and walls of the Oltrarno, almost entirely preserved – that three distinct heritage itinerariescentered on key areas of the history and life of Florence: the route to the south, along the Oltrarno walls “Rethinking the margin” (scheduled for March 30, April 7, 20 and 28, May 11 and 19), that north of the city, around Porta San Gallo “New traces of ancient relationships” (scheduled for March 31, April 13, 21, May 4, 12 and 25); and finally that around San Miniato al Monte (scheduled for April 6, 14, 27 and May 5, 18 and 26). With this last itinerary we also remember how the World Heritage site underwent a significant expansion in 2021, embracing precisely this area.
